My boys (6 & 3 y/o) are Shrek junkies! We have the DVD and watch it on a regular basis, plus they watch it at daycare as well. I really don't see much wrong with the humor, although some of it is a tad gross- but kids like that kind of stuff.
Of course there was a huge media blitz for Shrek 2, and all kinds of merchandising. It happens with nearly all the kids' movies and cartoons. It always has, and always will. That's just the nature of commercial consumerism in general. Personally, I don't think I'll be buying my munchkins the food-related products, but the Shrek liquid soap dispenser is cute (press down on his head and the soap comes out his ear).
Seriousy, I think Shrek & Shrek 2 were fine, Dunky, funny, Shrek, funny, animation, okay.... Everything was fine, I like the movie but I just thought it was missing something, but I don't know what ...

I loved both Shrek movies and think they are fine for all ages. With Shrek 2 you must sit through the ending credits to see something very cute. I won't ruin it for those who haven't seen it but believe me it's worth it. The message I have always gotten from the Shrek movies is that everyone is lovable, even an ogre.

I also liked how in the end we find out the Ogre find the woman most beautiful as an Ogre herself not as the beautiful princess. |
Yes it was well known that DreamWorks was very anti-Disney, and it was well represented in the film. I particulary liked when they made fun of DisneyWorld by mocking the roped-off lines in the amusement park, and the 'Its a small word' spoof.
I loved both movies. I enjoyed especially the voices. Eddie Murphy as the Donkey was fabulous, and I also liked Banderas's character, not to mention the ogre Shrek (I think it was M. Myers). The other cool part was the songs. I still listen to the soundtrack.
