I have a friend here that works at a local school. They have computers and used to have the internet, but now it is greatly restricted. Worried about viruses and kids surfing to inappropriate sites, I think.
Yes, I can imagine. The girls at my school are very wild, I just can imagine what they would do if they have internet access but I do think as teachers we should have some kind of benefit in using it.
I can not understand why people are accessing porn from work... there is no way that you can enjoy it. Every second you should be aware and looking over your shoulder. This is stressing ! If you are in to that do it from home. This is just an advice( is the way I do it). As from the security point of view, I totaly agree on total control of the company over your browsing. They are paying for everything and they have the rights to limit your access. It is only up to the level of security they feel safe implementing on their employes. There is no question about it !
As much as I hate this about my job working on computers in any number of different offices with great numbers of different users I have to admit I know of a few (Pages) of names that do have this habit. In most cases I do find that it is CEO, owner, manger, or other position of power that may lock their door as they please. But this is not always the case either. I do not know all of the legal aspects behind this but I have a number of companies that I administer networks for and at the owners request have full auditing turned on for program usage as well as internet activity. In cases as such I have procedures set up with each business owner for steps to follow and basically build their case file for them. Basically I log all of the audit reports including user name, time spent online, time of each questionable site, links clicked within that site, and so on. My reports get very detailed and I know of more than a few cases as to where people have lost their jobs over this. At one time I felt bad about this yet I have come to the conclusion that I should not feel bad for doing my job.
*Another story - Short and to the point.
I worked at a bowling center for years and had a few different managers in that time. One manager had a bad habit of hiding in his office for hours at a time. I did have an urgent matter one day and had to knock on his door to have him come out. Aside from it taking a few minutes before he emerged, when he responded to my knock he sounded out of breath. This is all very suspicious.
Same manager a few months later had found a new live cam adult site that he without a doubt liked very much. He actually called me to his office to show me a cam that he was looking at that he was enjoying. This was very sick for more reasons that one but I feel I should not elaborate on this board. (Outside the mature section that is.)
Here in the UK a lot of time is wasted by employees sending private mail and then surfing the web.
Where I work we turn a blind eyes to it where the employee does it in moderation and the sites are not offensive.
Joke emails are fun and let the staff have a laugh...which cannot be a bad thing.
The key to all this is it must be done in moderation
Surfing the Web at Work is OK Says Judge
I guess now I have seen everything. After all of the arguments for eliminating non work related web surfing from the office a judge has finally ruled on the issue.
This article is a must read.***
I have to agree with the judge's ruling because I am guilty of surfing at work, as are many others that I work with and know. As long as internet surfing is not degrading the work you put out at your job, and you are not visiting pornographic, or other questionable sites, then I don't see a problem with it. The guys at my job surf the web all the time. We visit forums (such as these) news sites, and even play games. I am just thankful that the company I work for is not so concerned about how much time I devote to the internet, so long as I am a productive employee.
