Playing games or surfing online while working. Looking at porn and getting viruses into networks. Should workers be allowed access online?

I use the internet at work all the time for both work and personal purposes. I believe if any law is inacted it will have to do with sexual harrassment in some way. That is the main concern when a person accesses a porn site at work. What if another worker sees the image while it is on your screen. This can be considered sexual harrassment. Now if you are a manager, the company is held personally liable for your actions so it is much worse when it is a manager than when it is just a "worker bee" In most cases, if the "worker bee" is disciplined or maybe fired as soon as the powers that be are informed of the situation that satisfies the law. However, if a manager is guilty of sexual harrassment the company doesn't get protection for simply firing the manager because a manager is considered to be a direct representative of the company.

One of the attorneys where I work uses his PC, off hours, to surf porn sites. I haven't witnessed it personally but another in my department has. It is my understanding that he isn't the only one. Upper management wouldn't support me in any effort to tell him to stop. He is a director (partner) of the firm.

No. In the US, if you do anything of a sexual nature that makes another employee uncomfortable it is considered sexual harrassment.

so, tenaheff, do you agree with me that personal use should be allowed in the workplace as long as it does not impact performance and does not include visiting questionable sites?

Absolutely, as long as it isn't abused. Especially for a salaried employee which I am. I have a job to do. As long as I get it done, it doesn't matter whether it is before or after 5:00 when I finish. Also, when things are slow, I spend a lot of time surfing. However, when things are hectic, I spend many late hours dealing with the issues.

Now, having said that. I think it depends upon how much time the employee spends on the net. At my office the secretaries go on line for personal business, but if they did it to the point where it prevented them from doing their jobs there would be a problem. I have not witnessed a situation where this was abused. I imagine it could be, but most workers, at least in my Firm are responsible adults and do what they must to accomplish what must be done and on time.

Internet connections at schools is a mixed blessing, but it certainly would make it better for you LDS. Do they have computers and just know net connection or no computers at all?
