Church Lessons: Book Or Bible

My fiance and I have had this conversation many times about whether we prefer going through Sunday School/Bible lessons using a book or using purely the Bible. We have both been in a setting where teachers have relied so heavily on the book we never opened our Bible. Bible verses were inside the lesson book, but you didn't need a Bible to read it.

There are some people who do not use books at all, but get every single lesson from the Bible. It requires the time to research through the Bible and make a lesson genuine.

Both have their good, solid points. What do you prefer? Do you prefer a lesson taken strictly from the Bible? Do you prefer a lesson book only? Do you prefer a balance of both?

Oh definitely a balance of both. I think books are a great guidance for whatever topic you need to teach but I think it is very important for the teacher to carefully also read the verses that the book suggests and probably add more if neccessary. The problem I see with using the Bible alone would be that there would be too much room for personal opinions and not doctrinal discussions. Books and manuals will help to keep that balance in place and assure the teacher is teaching in harmony with the doctrine of the Church he/she belongs to.

I agree with LDS. Growing up in sunday school, I learned the most from a mixture of both. Many times it was good to have a story related to a passage in the Bible to allow you to visual what you are learning. One particular class I was in as a teen would use real world situations from school to help show us how to apply our christian beliefs to our everyday life. That is the ultimate goal after all, to implement what the Bible teaches in your life.
