The definition of "eternal life" within the scriptures, is life with God, for eternity. It normally refers to life within the highest level of the Celestial Kingdom. While we will all have immortality, eternal life is something different.
Otherwise, it is known as exaltation.
LDS, thanks for that talk, I downloaded it, printed it out and had a good read. Everyone here should read it, it gives the specific details about what you need to do towards making Your Calling an Election Sure.
As far as some personal thoughts... we are told that we can see the face of Christ if we are worthy, in the case of this topic we are promised that we will at least hear His voice, in this we can now measure our current position of readiness... this is something I am excited about, I have the rest of my earthly life to work towards it.
The past few weeks I have been reflecting on this and I have come to see where charity - which is the pure love of Christ is where it is all at. I am currently seeking to be more charitable. It is difficult sometimes to do this in a world where people take charity to mean something else, but I am finding unique ways to overcome it.
Can you tell that I really love this topic?
Recently LDS pointed out to me that the Book of Mormon Institute manual describes 5 specific points as referenced to Joseph Smith that we must accomplish in order to make our Call sure...
1. First learn about the Lord
2. Understand Him by striving to become like Him (Alma 32)
3. Establish a hope within you - become assured that you are born of the Spirit
4. Endure to the End
5. Be willing and ready to receive the Lord in this life (D&C 93:1; 88:67, 68
There is lots more, but this is the condensed version. Now you can look at the five points and see where you are there.

The verse 4 of the Hymn "I believe in Christ" who was wrote by Elder Bruce R. Mc Conkie talks about making our call and election sure:
I believe in Christ; he stands supreme!
From him I"ll gain my fondest dream;
And while I strive through grief and pain,
His voice is heard: "Ye shall obtain."
I believe in Christ; so come what may,
With him I"ll stand in that great day
When on this earth he comes again
To rule among the sons of men.
And the verse 4 of the hymn "Come, Listen to a Prophet's Voice"
Then heed the words of truth and light
That flow from fountains pure.
Yea, keep His law with all thy might
Till thine election's sure,
Till thou shalt hear the holy voice
Assure eternal reign,
While joy and cheer attend thy choice,
As one who shall obtain.
Ether 4: 13-14
"13 Come unto me, O ye Gentiles, and I will show unto you the greater things, the knowledge which is hid up because of unbelief.
14 Come unto me, O ye house of Israel, and it shall be made manifest unto you how great things the Father hath laid up for you, from the foundation of the world; and it hath not come unto you, because of unbelief.
I think this scripture pretty much refers to the deeper doctrines of the Gospel which include making our call and election sure.
Also I found this talk by Elder Bruce R. Mc Conkie and the blessings of the Priesthood, in the blessing number 9 he mentions about the privilege of making our call and election sure and number 10 about seeing face to face to God.

There are actually many scriptures dealing with this topic I have discovered recently. Another one in Doctrine and Covenants 88:1-4. Revelation given by Joseph Smith to a small congregation of Saints:
"1 VERILY, thus saith the Lord unto you who have assembled yourselves together to receive his will concerning you:
2 Behold, this is pleasing unto your Lord, and the angels rejoice over you; the alms of your prayers have come up into the ears of the Lord of Sabath, and are recorded in the dbook of the names of the sanctified, even them of the celestial world.
3 Wherefore, I now send upon you another aComforter, even upon you my friends, that it may abide in your hearts, even the Holy Spirit of promise; which other Comforter is the same that I promised unto my disciples, as is recorded in the testimony of John.
4 This Comforter is the promise which I give unto you of eternal life, even the glory of the celestial kingdom;"
I think the following could only be obtained by making our Call and Election Sure:
"Every Latter-day Saint has the responsibility to know for himself or herself with a certainty beyond doubt that Jesus is the resurrected, living Son of the living God."
(President Gordon B. Hinckley,Ensign, Jan. 2000, 2)
Here are a few suggestions for your consideration. Look at the references to the Church of the Firstborn in the Doctrine and Covenants, particularly 76 (These are they) and 93 (particularly verses 12 through 22). Carefully study sections 130, 131, and 132 as well.
Carefully read the Bible Dictionary entry on Grace. Read and cross reference the scriptures regarding Grace in the New Testament and the Book of Mormon (Enos, 2 Nephi 25 and Helaman 5, particularly in the final verses, are very good). We must grow from grace to grace through the power of the atonement. It is a continuing cycle:
1. Show forth faith
2. Bring forth fruits worthy of repentence
3. Receive a new grace
4. Reiterate
I think that each grace involves an increased vision, greater focus on things of the spirit, a greater level of charity, greater strength to resist temptation, and an increased level of the Companionship of the Holy Ghost. At some point, as the Sections 76 and 130 point out, the Heavens are fully opened. Section 76 even mentions that a portion of the vision is withheld and only will be revealed only to those that are worthy to receive it for themselves.
Search the scriptures, prayerfully contemplate this subject when you go to the Temple. This is a sacred subject, and I don't believe a more open discussion is appropriate or even possible via this medium. The Church and the revealed ordinances are an essential part of this process, they can not be separated - we must be baptized, ordained, endowed, and sealed. However, our growth through this path of progression is personal and must be experienced on a personal, and spiritual level.
"May we not shrink when we discover, paradoxically, how dear a price we must pay to receive what is, finally, a gift from Him. When the Savior's all and our all come together, we will find not only forgiveness of sin, 'we shall see him as he is,' and 'we shall be like him' (Moroni 7:48; 1 John 3:2)."
