Comments: Wow! Where to even start? The Prophet Joseph Smith said:
QUOTE I can taste the principles of eternal life, and so can you. They are given to me by the revelations of Jesus Christ; and I know that when I tell you these words of eternal life as they are given to me, you taste them, and I know at you believe them. You say honey is sweet, and so do I. I can also taste the spirit of eternal life. I know it is good; and when I tell you of these things which were given me by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, you are bound to receive them as sweet, and rejoice more and more. (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 355)
There is much on this thread that does not taste good, and most of it seems to be coming from one contributor. My advice is to reject whatever does not "Taste" good. I shall contribute my two cents worth and let you decide if it "Tastes" good or not.
Let's address one issue first. There seems to be a great deal of ignorance in the Church with respect to what is meant by "The Holy Spirit of promise." When a general authority says one thing and the Lord says something else, the word of the Lord should take precedence. So, let's take the Lord's definition of the Holy Spirit of promise:
QUOTE Wherefore, I now send upon you another Comforter, even upon you my friends, that it may abide in your hearts, even the Holy Spirit of promise; which other Comforter is the same that I promised unto my disciples, as is recorded in the testimony of John.
This other Comforter is the promise which I give unto you of eternal life, even the glory of the celestial kingdom. (D&C 88:3-4)
>From this it is clear that the Holy Spirit of promise is the promise of eternal life and NOT the Holy Ghost, and there is no scripture anywhere that ever says anything about the Holy Ghost needing to "Ratify" ordinances performed by those who hold the priesthood, which is the authority of God (see D&C 121:37). When the Lord gives a man His authority, and then that man uses that authority to perform a priesthood ordinance, it is as valid as if the Lord had performed that ordinance Himself.
QUOTE . .. Whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same. (D&C 1:38)
Since when does the Holy Ghost need to ratify ordinances performed by the Savior, who is higher than him in the Godhead? He doesn't, neither does he need to ratify ordinances performed by those to whom the Savior has given His authority.
The Savior has given to His prophets the authority to seal on earth and it would be sealed in heaven, irrespective of any purely hypothetical ratification buy the Holy Ghost:
QUOTE For I have conferred upon you the keys and power of the priesthood, wherein I restore all things, and make known unto you all things in due time.
And verily, verily, I say unto you, that whatsoever you seal on earth shall be sealed in heaven.. ..
The use of the word "Shall" makes the statement emphatic, just as it does in the ten commandments, and note that the Lord does NOT say that it shall be sealed in heaven, IF it is ratified by the Holy Ghost. When the Prophet of God, who holds the keys of the sealing power, seals someone up to eternal life, that person is sealed up to eternal life, irrespective of any purely hypothetical ratification by the Holy Ghost, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. It's as valid as if the Lord, Himself, had sealed that person up to eternal life because the Prophet did so with the authority of Jesus Christ, Himself (see D&C 1:38).
Since we know that the Holy Spirit of promise is the promise of eternal life, then through whom does that promise come?
QUOTE And verily I say unto you, that the conditions of this law are these: All covenants, contracts, bonds, obligations, oaths, vows, performances, connections, associations, or expectations that are not made and entered into and sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, of him who is anointed both as well for time and for all eternity, and that too most holy, by revelation and commandment through the medium of mine anointed, whom I have appointed on the earth to hold this power (And I have appointed unto my servant Joseph to hold this power in the last days, and there is never but one on the earth at a time on whom this power and the keys of this priesthood are conferred), are of no efficacy, virtue, or force in and after the resurrection from the dead; for all contracts that are not made unto this end have an end when men are dead. (D&C 132:7)
>From this it is clear that the one through whom the promise of eternal life comes is the living prophet, whenever he seals a person with the Holy Spirit of promise. That is the ordinance that is known as a Second Anointing. It is the Second Anointing that makes a person's calling and election sure, and it does not need to be "Ratified" by the Holy Ghost. The doctrine that ordinances need to be "Ratified" by the Holy Ghost cannot be found anywhere in any of the four standard works of the Church.
Can the Prophet delegate the authority to perform that ordinance to others? Yes, but the revelation to seal any particular person up to eternal life would have to come through the living prophet.
Does the ordinance need to be received in this life? No, it can also be received by proxy in the spirit world by someone performing that ordinance for them in this life. [In my humble opinion], that will be the great mission of the 144,000 in the millennium. They will be 144,000 full-time temple workers who will be performing the Second Anointing and sealing up to eternal life those who are worthy of exaltation but who did not receive the ordinance in this life, because nobody can be exalted without receiving this ordinance either in this life or by proxy in the next.
What does it mean to have your calling and election made sure? In discussing the doctrine of Calling and Election Made Sure, Elder Bruce R. McConkie quotes D&C 132:26, which reads as follows:
QUOTE Verily, verily, I say unto you, if a man marry a wife according to my word [temple marriage], and they are sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, according to mine appointment, and he or she or she shall commit any sin or transgression of the new and everlasting covenant whatever, and all manner of blasphemies, and if they commit no murder wherein they shed innocent blood, yet they shall come forth in the first resurrection, and enter into their exaltation; but they shall be destroyed in the flesh, and shall be delivered unto the buffetings of Satan [spend time in hell] unto the day of redemption, saith the Lord God. (D&C 132:26)
Where was calling and election ever mentioned in that verse? It never was, yet Elder McConkie quotes it as talking about calling and election made sure. What we do find mentioned is being sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise. That is what makes a person's calling and election sure.
And what happens if we are not sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, either in this life or by proxy in the next? See D&C 132:7.
