Snake venom composition could be related to hormones and diet
Many people are afraid of snakes, but scientists are now revealing insights about their venoms that could give even ophidiophobes an appreciation for the animals. One team has found that the proteins from the venom gland can vary depending on age and gender. These findings suggest that hormonal and dietary influences are at play. Ref. Source 1b.
Unfortunately, because we cannot detect the diet or lifestyle of a venomous snake this knowledge does not alleviate fears so the best thing to do is exercise extreme caution the next time you take a step in nature.

I always thought you should bite the snake back to give it a taste of its own medicine *smile*
What I like is the above post about a "Wild" cottonmouth. I did not know there were tame or pet ones around. I thought all were wild.
I learned early on in life that if you are walking around to watch what is around you. IT does not matter if on a street, or in the woods or a city park if you watch out for wildlife you will be less likely to get snake bit. If you do happen to get bit by a snake seek medical attention fast. Get a picture of the snake if you can to allow the medical personnel to treat you for the correct snake bite.
Well of course the best way of surviving a snake bite is avoiding the situation entirely. Another point of advise, both before being bitten and afterwards, is to stay calm.
If you avoid sudden movements and keep still or activity slow, you can more readily avoid the snake attacking if met. If you do not appear as a threat, the snake may very well go away, so staying still can keep you from being bitten.
By keeping calm after being bitten, it slows the progression of the venom by keeping your heart rate decreased. It would also have a means of slowing circulation in the area if you bind an area above unless the venom can be removed.
Most of all, when hiking, camping, or otherwise being where snakes are known keeping a ani-venom kit handy, so as to be ready if such does happen. As is the scout motto or that of a certain well known villian, Be Prepared.

Snake bite? Chemists figure out how to easily and cheaply halt venom's spread
Chemists have developed a way to neutralize deadly snake venom more cheaply and effectively than with traditional anti-venom -- an innovation that could spare millions of people the loss of life or limbs each year. Ref. Source 9t.
This sounds very great. To carry a jell or a liquid that you can spread on a bite or drink to counter act a snake bite would help many many people each year. Thus if you are out backpacking or camping you would not have to worry so much about snake bites.
