I agree with most of what they say about Heavy Metal. It's not just 'noise' or rubbish. It's music. Not all are the best, but not all are the worst. When I look into bands or songs from these two categories, I look for awesome lyrics and great singing voices. The playing must be to my liking as well.

I'm not one to hear any kind of Heavy Metal or punk song and go, " Oh my gosh, I love this song, because it's soooo Metal and/or Punk!". That's just disturbing.

When it comes to music...anything other than country, new age hip hop and Pop music I can find something to like. But still, I will always put Heavy Metal as my first priority.

Lyrics are really important in a song, yet when I listen to music, it's really the music that makes me enjoy the song. They could have crap lyrics, but if the music is good, I like the song. But if it's the other way, (good lyrics, bad music) I really wouldn't like the song.

I love heavy metal. But it does give me a headache. I suffer from migranes. So I can't really listen to it that often. But that's all my boyfriend listens to. SO I am forced to listen to it also.

It is all about personal taste. I could honestly argue the same about any other music genre out there. Personally Punk Rock is my favorite genre. If you ever just sit down and listen to the lyrics of a punk song (preferably a Clash one) I think you will find much meaning in it.

I love Slipknot, but find Metallica creepy...

I find that very interesting. From a musical point of view (my self being a musician) metallica has vast more talent than slipknot. Cliff burton and Robert Trulilo are probably two of the most talented bassist around. Lars Ullrich is an outstanding drummer (though outside of metallica he is a jerk). James Hetfield is well known in the rock community as one of the greatest rhythm guitarist to date, as well as a great vocalist. Kirk Hammett, despite his lack of feeling (he never does vibratos or bends) he is a complete master of scales and tapping. One of the best lead guitarist in many's opinions.
Slipknot, on the other hand, has little teqchniqe to their guitar riffs. and are you going to tell me that Corey Tailor is a good vocalist?

Now lets look at it from the lyrical point of view.

While no style of music (except church music) is purely clean, metallica does have a lot of good songs lyrically speaking. Take, for instance, "Hero of the Day" off of their "Load" album. Great song about how we look for heros in the mainstream, while abandoning the real hero's we have at home. And that is just one of many songs they have. Creeping Death, off their "Ride the lightning" album is taken out of the bible; its about the angel of death that visited Egypt.

now that I'm done with that

Why do people consider bands like Green Day, MxPx, New Found GLory, Simple Plan, and Fall out Boy punk, while never making mention of the true punk bands out there such as:
      Rancid
      Rammones
      Social Distortion
      Sex Pistols
      D.K.

and there are so many more.

Personally, it depends on the band. You can't attack a style of music. Some Punk and Metal bands are absolutely amazing with talent, such as Social Distortion, Van Halen, Alice in Chains ect. I think everyone has a flavor that they like. I despise most country artist, but it is music that I must admit.

It all seems to be just noise and craziness to me, what do you think?

Punk and Heavy Metal does not appeal to my delicate senses. I say if you want noise then just go to a construction site, there is lots of noise there!

I love both of these types of music! They are a large part of the music that makes up my music library, besides some other genres of rock. Of course they are both really music not just "noise" or "the static between radio stations" as my friend's sister calls it.

I like both these types of music, and I have found that heavy metal music hasn't changed so much over the years, whilst punk seems to have come full circle and reinvented itself!
I like the modern punk groups such as Green Day and New found Glory, but still like the original punk like the Sex Pistols and The Jam.
It has made me realize how old I actually am laugh.gif
For heavy metal I like Alice Cooper, Rainbow, Metallica and Deep Purple.
I'll probably still like this music if I'm fortunate to live to about 80 *smiles*
