Gastric Bypass Surgery

What do you think about this procedure for chronic over weight? Do you think that the obese should use normal methods first like diet and exercise?

Severe obesity is a chronic condition that is difficult to treat through diet and exercise alone. Gastrointestinal surgery is the best option for people who are severely obese and cannot lose weight by traditional means or who suffer from serious obesity-related health problems. The surgery promotes weight loss by restricting food intake and, in some operations, interrupting the digestive process. As in other treatments for obesity, the best results are achieved with healthy eating behaviors and regular physical activity.

Surgery Bypass Gastric

I believe that the complications from gastric bypass are serious enough where such individuals must consider normal means of weight loss first. This procedure should be used as a last resort. With that being said, some individuals almost seem to view gastric bypass as cosmetic surgery, ie, a quick way to lose weight without having to do much. This is not what the procedure was initially intended for but unfortunately it is quickly becoming just that.

Gastric Bypass Surgery Health & Special Psychology

This is one of the scariest procedures performed today. They are risky and and fraught with complications. I now know three people who have undergone this surgery. One, a member of my church, and gentleman in his 30's who died from complications during the procedure, leaving his wife and 4 children. Two, a woman in her late 40's who is now very thin, but is very unhealthy. Her formerly beautiful glossy brown hair is now gray and brittle, and her skin color/texture is terrible. Three, my daughter's grandmother (on her dad's side) just had the procedure done about two weeks ago. She's improving, but I saw her today and she is exhausted -- -much thinner already, as she wanted, but very weak. We are of course hoping and praying that her health will continue to improve.

It seems a shame that less invasive techniques are shunned in favor of such a drastic change in one's body function. I'm not sure I could even consider it, unless perhaps other health risks were apparent if diet and exercise did not work.
