Iraq says it has reached a deal to share intelligence with Russia, Iran and Syria in the fight against ISIS. The announcement Sunday from the Iraqi military cited "The increasing concern from Russia about thousands of Russian terrorists committing criminal acts within ISIS." Ref. CNN
Bombs across Baghdad kill nine people: sources:
Bombs in and around Baghdad killed at least nine people on Saturday, police and medical sources said, highlighting security challenges that include Islamist militancy and sectarian conflict. Ref. Source 4n
At least 64 people were killed when a bomb went off at a market in Baghdad, according to Iraqi police.
An additional 87 people were injured in the attack in the largely Shiite neighborhood of Sadr City.
ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement on social media, saying it was targeting Shiite militias. Police said the bomb was placed in a parked car. Ref. CNN.
Death toll from ISIL-claimed bombing at Baghdad shopping center rises to 115, Iraqi officials say
Officials said Sunday that another 187 people were wounded in the attack. Most victims were inside a multi-story shopping and amusement mall, after breaking Ramadan fast. Ref. USAToday.
A military operation led by Iraqi forces was launched today aimed at ending ISIS’ control of Mosul, Iraq.
The city, which has been under ISIS rule for two years, is the group’s last major stronghold in the country.
US military officials estimate there are 3,500-5,000 ISIS fighters in Mosul. ISIS supporters say there are at least 7,000 fighters there.
Some Peshmerga commanders who are part of the offensive expect it will take at least three months to clear the city as ISIS may leave sleeper cells behind. Others expect a quicker victory, with ISIS leaders choosing to retreat to the vast desert west of Mosul. Ref. CNN.
Mass grave containing 100 bodies found in town south of Mosul:
The mass grave was found by Iraqi forces in the School of Agriculture on the outskirts of Hammam al-Alil, a town that was recaptured from ISIS on Monday, Iraq's Joint Military Command said. Ref. Source 8k.
35% of western Mosul still controlled by Islamic State;
Iraqi Defense Minister Erfan al-Hiyali said life returned back to normal in the eastern side and that the Iraqi troops are in high spirit and making their best to secure the citizens and their properties. Ref. Source 3i.
