Everything looks to be in order, hope you enjoy the game. Getting going from here is pretty simple. A lot simpler than making a character I think. I will include a link below that goes to the missing ships game thread. Click that link and it will bring you to the actual thread were the game play takes place.
Once your in look around for a button that says Add Reply. It should be at the top right next to the thread title and page numbers. Click on that and a text box will appear, enter your characters thoughts and or actions here. Pretty sure you know most of what I said already, hope this helps. Also if you have ANY questions feel free to post them in this thread. (D&D Missing Ships Characters)

One more thing I forgot to mention. You character Arthas will be starting out in the fishing vessel just off shore from the party (Ginoye Reef). It is near night (game time) and because of this and your armor, swimming to shore is not advisable at this point. You could rent a boat for 8gp but I see you have no gold. My advice would be to wait until morning in the game before attempting a swim. Further removing your armor and possibly bringing some sort of flotation device would help greatly.

I want to ask some questions.
First, I don't have 'swim' ability. Can I still swim? If I can, does it affect my character badly when he (my character) arrive on the land?
Second, In a post of link you gave:
Generally, you can do any UNTRAINED (UT) skill check, even for a skill you do not have ranks in. Each skill has a related ability. Swim, for example, is a Str check. So you add your Str modifier to the result when you roll a D20. Eg, a Str of 10 has a modifier of (+0) and so getting a 12 on your die, you add zero and tell the DM your result (of 12 in case you couldn't figure it out.)
Having a rank in a skill, confers a +1 bonus to that specific skill check. So having Str 10 (+0) with 1 rank in swim gives you a +1 to your D20 roll.
The difference between untrained skill and trained skills are in the manual, I can't remember off the top of my head. There isn't just one copy of the manual either. This site has one, but googling also gives results, considering the game is under Open Game License.
ICon is correct in everything he said. Your character is able to swim, it is a general skill. To see how well your character is swimming you would roll a 1d20 and add your strength modifier, plus any other bonuses. Some skills get bonuses because of your race.
Investing skill points into a skill will give you ranks in that skill. That will raise your ability. Further once you have put a certain number of ranks in a skill some skills will give you a bonus then for another skill. For example, if you have 5 or more ranks in Use Rope, you get a +2 bonus on Escape Artist checks when escaping from rope bonds.
As for affecting your character once you are on land the answer is no, and yes. It won't really affect it but you might be a little wet. If I were trying to be a real stickler I could look threw your inventory and see if any items might be ruined or damaged if they were submerged in water. I'm not really that concerned with all that though. We can just assume your character would already be aware of that and take precautions automatically.
Also your going to be a little tired after a swim. So if you had to jump right into a long battle as soon as you got on land you may get fatigued. Don't worry about that either because I'm not going to factor in fatigue, some DM's do.
What Avan was doing when he posted the listen, attack, and damage was simple combat. The listen check was not needed to make an attack but because he was unable to see his target threw the brush he decided to listen for his location. The fact that he rolled a nat. 20 (basically an automatic success) allowed his character to know the pirates location by listening. The attack roll was to see if his character was accurate enough to hit the target and also if the arrow was able to penetrate the target armor. The damage roll was to see how much damage the target received.
So if you want to use a skill you simply say I'm using (skill) in such and such way, here is my roll. Then the DM will determine the difficulty of said task and whether or not you were able to roll high enough to succeed. If Avan had rolled a 2 or 3 or something I would have posted that he was unable to hear the pirate. Also I think you should know if the pirate had been trying to move silently, that roll would have gone against Avan's roll. So Avan would have had to roll even higher to overcome and hear the pirate who is actively trying to remain silent.
Does that answer your question? If not I can try and give you some more information. If you have any more questions I can try and answer those too.

Yes you can post whatever thoughts or actions your character would be doing/having. It is about 1 hour until nightfall (in game) at this point.
I want to add here that skills can be done without rolls in some cases. There are a few paragraphs in the section under Checks without Rolls, in the skills part of the handbook.
