I saw the speech Panday gave after UNC lost the elections. He is such a sore loser! Instead of being humble and giving a gracious speech like COP leader, Mr Winston Dookeran, Panday actually lashed out at the audience. He believes that Manning conspired with COP to split the votes. The crowd seemed happier to see Mr Jack Warner and greeted him more warmly than Mr Panday. Hmm interesting. Maybe the public is finally seeing Basdeo Panday's true colours. Well, he is the opposition leader for second time and as any sore loser he says "he will give them hell".

UNITED National Congress Alliance co-leader Basdeo Panday was confirmed as Opposition Leader last night. Panday said he had resolved himself to return to the Parliament as Opposition Leader for the second time. "I'm gonna give them hell," he said in an interview with the Express. However, Panday said a decision as to who will be the Opposition Chief Whip is still to be made. "We will determine that later on," he said. There was some speculation yesterday that former attorney general Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj will be replace Dr Hamza Rafeeq as the Opposition Chief Whip. The decision on Panday returning as Opposition Leader was made following a meeting of the party's leadership council at Rienzi Complex in Couva. The Express understands that when the committee met yesterday evening to discuss the matter, Panday had the unanimous support of the council... |
Did you all read the news that Panday was suspended from Parliament for using a laptop? Really, it wasn't because of that. Members of the Parliament are asked to seek permission in using electronic devices in the House. Panday has been using his laptop for months despite the warnings. When another member was called upon the issue, that member close his laptop immediately but Panday did not. He chose to get all hyper, shout and refuse to leave the House.
This guy really thinks he is above everyone.

Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday has been suspended from Parliament for the remainder of the session, which can extend until December 16, 2008, House Speaker Barry Sinanan confirmed yesterday. Sinanan pointed out however that the Parliament could rescind this suspension at any time. He said the Standing Order 43 (10) under which Panday was suspended states that "any member suspended who refuses to withdraw from the House, the Speaker shall point out that force was necessary and in such circumstances the member is automatically suspended for the remainder of the session". Panday was suspended for defying the Speaker, who ruled against the unauthorised use of laptops. Told that Panday has been using the laptop consistently over the past few months, Sinanan explained that he sent out a circular, dated February 25, reminding MPs that they must seek his permission to use electronic devices and that such use must relate to matters being discussed in the Parliament on that day. Yesterday was the first time that Sinanan was in the Chair since the circular was sent out and therefore his first opportunity to enforce it. Explaining the ruling, Speaker asked rhetorically, "what would prevent 41 members from using laptops during the sitting? One doesn't know if they are looking at pornography or chatting on-line". He said May's Parliamentary Practice very explicitly stated that MPs could not use electronic equipment as an aide-memoire when addressing the House. "The Oropouche East MP Roodal Moonilal, who loves to use laptops and this palm recorder thing (Ipod) and other electronic gadgets, has sought my permission on many occasions and obtained it for the purpose of participating in a debate on the same day. He has always acted correctly," Sinanan said. Sinanan said the member who he observed using the computer and whom he had planned "to teach a lesson yesterday" was (Sport Minister) "Gary Hunt, not Mr Panday". Sinanan said yesterday Hunt was the first one to whom he addressed his statements about the use of the laptop. Hunt promptly closed his computer but Sinanan noted, "Mr Panday decided to defy the Chair". Panday went further. He shouted at Sinanan and refused to leave when ordered to do so by Sinanan. Sinanan explained that he chose to adjourn rather than have the police remove Panday forcibly, "in order to maintain the dignity of the Parliament.... |
I really had a good laugh when Panday was thrown out of Parliament. First of all, Panday as usual, showed his true colours when he behaved like a petulant child with a toy. The Speaker of the House was asking him a question and he refused to answer him! How rude!
But one thing puzzles me. Why do members of the Parliament have to seek permission from the Speaker to use a laptop? I consider this regulation to be rather "primary school." One can even equate it to a child raising his hand and seeking permission from the teacher to go to the bathroom. To an extent, I am aware that some members of the Parliament, like Panday, would abuse the use of the technology to be disrespectful towards others; for instance, if they wish to ignore other members of Parliament or the Speaker, they may pretend to be interested in something on the laptop. If you ask me, they should resort to the old fashioned way of taking notes, that is, by using pen and paper. It is a lot cheaper and not to mention, they could be spending that $100,000.00 on upgrading the health sector or increasing security in schools! Just my humble opinion!
Does anyone think that Panday should of retired long ago or does he really still pack a punch in keeping the Manning administration in check?
I like Panday. He's charismatic and passionate, and is obviously popular in the country because of his past trade union work.
Even with his court case, I don't mind. I think politicians universally can get into trouble and be suspect.
I also respect Panday for being the first (and obviously to date only) Indo-Trini PM.
Indians are the majority in T&T and it seems strange there has ever only been one Indian PM in its history. It's even more bizarre considering that Indians control most of the businesses and wealth as well.
