I was reading recently where someone said that they knew of a Brother in the Church that practised plural marriage secretly at home without making any public mention of it. They used the idea that Joseph did it secretly for years and under like conditions they also do so. I was wondering if that is true for some members in Utah that may be doing this and others who have a hint may be just staying quiet?
As I understand it, this happens quite a lot in Utah. My aunt and uncle practiced it for some time secretly. When their church leaders found out about it, they were excommunicated, then began to live it openly.
There are some who claim that some plural marriages are allowed to continue by the Church authorities, as long as it is kept quiet. I certainly take such claims with a big grain of salt.
I wonder if the desire to live this way (in hiding) is prompted by sexual or intimate desire rather than some spiritual belief? In either case they will be essentially committing adultery or fornication (depending on how you look at it) since no one can legally (either by law or spirit) solemnize such a marriage.
Excellent point JB. When someone is willing to ignore the law of chastity because they believe they have a right to live the law of celestial marriage on earth today, I think they are a bit misguided to say the least. Just because you commit yourself to someone doesn't make you married to them.
Well, you all know that I disagree with you on this. As far as the law goes, just because it is unlawful, doesn't mean it is wrong. As far as the church decrees go, if the person is outside the church, practicing their own beliefs according to their consciences, then the church should just leave them alone. But it doesn't.
These people very sincerely believe that they are living according to God's will. To stand on the outside and accuse them of adultery, because of our prejudices, is absolutely wrong.
I'm not saying that they are right, but I leave it up to them and God. They aren't hurting me, the Church, nor society. The only people they are hurting are the busybodies who want to force them to conform to Babylon.
I sincerely believe that most of the persecution that polygamists receive comes from the fact that most Mormons in Utah (especially those born and raised there) KNOW without any doubt that:
1) the principle of plural marriage is true and eternal
2) that the Church members, not God, rejected the principle
3) that one day it will be allowed again
4) that they do NOT see it as God does
5) that they are WRONG in their prejudices
Although I know what you are trying to say there is one fact that clearly dispells that... plural marriage was only to be sanctioned under the hand of the Presiding authority. At the time of Joseph, as he said, only he could authorize the marriage to more than one woman. The point here is that no one is giving those who currently practise it - the right. Another thing, I do not believe the Church is persecuting them, I believe it is in fact the other way around, they are trying to bend what has already been declared in the manifesto by deceitfully declaring themselves in monogamous relationships (in some cases) while living an alter lifestyle. This against the rules of membership - wether they like it or not.
The last Apostle to be excommunicated was secretly living Polygamy....Richard Lyman, back in the 1940's. I think those who are secretly doing this are in transgression. Even if it is an eternal law, it is not currently allowed. If God has authorized certain polygymous unions, then it is ok. But this would be done in the proper order, under the direction of the prophet.
