The Greatest Generation

This last Memorial Day weekend, here in the US (May 29 - 31, 2004), a new memorial was dedicated in Washington, D.C., commemorating the people who fought fascism in the early 1940's, whether they were actually in the middle of firefights, sacrificing their time and talents, rationing food, or whatever other way they were involved in World War II.

I urge you to look at page 1 and page 2 of an excellent photo essay about the dedication and many of the people who were involved in that war. It is a very touching tribute to this, the "Greatest Generation" of the United States.

Thanks for the link Nighthawk. It was a great tribute. I hope everyone will take the time to look at it. These were great men and they existed all over the world not just in the US. We should never forget.

I was very touched also to view the images of that weekend as they were broadcast from the shores of Normandy.

What a terrible thing that so much of what is going on in Europe today is promoting those things against which those veterans fought, but in the name of peace this time; by stealth rather than by war.

We should never forget, but many do - and many of them in the highest of positions...

Yes, good to remember what is often taken for granted. Actually this is one of the reasons we started the Historic Profiles & History board - to remember these people and talk about the great efforts of these men of yester year, some of whom we will never know until a next life.

I really should have posted this one before. Serenity is a magnificent writer, and put a lot of work into creating her own memorial for D-Day.

I have only read a few of the links she gives. But they are very powerful stories.

In particular, you should read this one, about a US soldier who was a hero not only for the US, but for the Soviet Union. After being captured by the Germans, he escaped from a POW camp, joined up with the Soviet army, and fought on their side.

The Greatest Generation

Two of my cousins are filmmakers and involved in a World War II documentary/data base of information. They have already interviewed over 300 veterans (including some of my uncles) and are moving forward with what is turning into a great work. Their goal is to contribute these stories, on film, to the Library of Congress.

One of their main obstacles, they say, is the reluctance of these brave men to discuss their experiences. I hope with this great memorial, more of them will be encouraged to come forward and tell their stories to the world.
