Socializing In The Workplace

Socializing in the Workplace

Do you think socializing in the workplace is an important aspect of every business place or is it just a means to take precious time from your boss' work time? Consider the following in your argument:

1. When would socializing with fellow workers outside of breaks be appropriate - if any?
2. Should you ever engage your superior with 'outside business' talk?
3. If someone chooses to not be social because they rather get their work done do you often see that as being 'stuck up'?

Workplace The Socializing

From experience, socializing in the work places helps make the job enjoyable. My boss is absolutely the final word when on the clock and he commands the respect his position implies. But outside of work, he is one of my good friends. In fact, he is that way with everyone else on the shift. He rights our reviews, trains us, recommends pay increases and the like, but is still our friends. Since he is a good leader, he has never allowed us to take advantage of our friendship. At the same time, he is able to write someone on the shift up for their decisions, but still go out to the bar with them after ward. He has set a precedent that cannot be broken, that work is work and play is play. At the same time, it makes for a very enjoyable work atmosphere that involves allot of team work since we are all friends. We have no secrets or back bitting and all of us bend over backwards to help each other with out being asked. Socializing at the work place, when kept in check by a good boss, is extremely helpful towards creating a great work environment.

Socializing In The Workplace History & Civil Business Politics

My previous job I guess was a blessing! Picture the movie "Office Space" but instead of cube dividers that allowed you to see the person next to you, we had cube dividers that were 5 ft tall. Our office was fast paced, yet very informal, and since we didn't deal with customers/patients in a face-to-face environment, we were able to kick back and enjoy ourselves all day long.
We spoke over the walls, spoke to people two rows or so down, and sometimes even threw change or paperclips over walls to get someone's attention with headphones. We were very fortunate to be able to have our own radios and/or CD Players as long as they were at a low level that didn't disturb anyone. And can you imagine for a workplace of about 70 women, we all got along all the time! For the type work we did, which was very demanding and stressful, it was a necessity, I think, to be able to joke around all day long.
Because it was an office full of nurses, we discussed all our own medical/personal problems all the time, and with our bosses right in our area, they would often chime in and add their opinion to the "buzz".
There were a few people that chose not to participate in office functions/parties, but everyone else mostly left them alone. I also think that they have a right not to participate and people should not judge them for their choices.
Obviously, there are many different work environments, and I bet most require silence and depersonalization, but thank goodness I got to experience such a great place.

I think its o,k, to socialize in a work place as long as you keep it decent and that it dosen't interfear with the work. after all we just can't stand there and be manaquins.

Name: Rdor

Comments: What if you're in a place where socializing in a BREAK or LUNCHBREAK is considered inappropriate and/or impossible because co-workers are withdrawn, unfriendly or just too goody and want to appear 'professional'? Where you're supposed to act like a robot with no life outside your job. That is the situation many people face, every day.

Talking during work time? ....well I wouldn't mind 30 seconds worth of outside-world-acknowledgment in a tea break.

Many people in my work place socialize. We find it a nice way to pass the time. We do not talk about work unless it has to do with a question or a problem arises. We talk of the weather an what we did on the weekend or significant things that happen while we were driving or in our lives. It is a way to get to know each other better.

Socializing The Workplace

When I was working, this was one of the hardest things for me to do. Basically people are very curious and I am quite reserved so unless I want to share some information with you I don't like the never ending questions that people here love to do. It makes me feel very uncomfortable.

I am a quiet person too. Many at my work place do not know much about me or my family. When they ask all of these questions I choose to answer very vague. If they ask if I have children I say yes. When they ask how many I say more than one. All questions they really want to know do go away after time. smile.gif
