HARLEM IS EMBRACING LDS PRESENCE
It's a sultry summer night on 129th Street, where residents have congregated around a charcoal barbecue grill set up outside the local branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I'm sure some of the LDS members in Harlem really make a different in the lifestyle of the people there, and also many non-LDS try to make a difference too. Despite of what they say about Harlem many succesful people come from there and they are a living proof that no matter where you are born, is up to you, to break the chain and make a difference.
When I was 16 years old and in high school, our school was invited to participate in the USA Bicentennial celebrations in Washington DC and other states that were part of the original 13 colonies. When we entered New York, we drove through Harlem. Imagine 50 - 75 kids from East Los Angeles, on a bus, in absolute silence, seeing Harlem for the first time. These were not "wealthy" kids by any stretch of the imagination, but kids from the barrio. And Harlem was shocking to us. It heartens me that there has been improvement there in the past 30 years, and people still seeking for the betterment of the neighborhood.

In 1973 my husband and I drove through Harlem. I was terrified! It was on a Sunday at noon and I think it was June. I had the doors locked and I tried so hard not to stare with my mouth open in frank terror. I could not get over the caliber of the people there and how they were living!
