I would like to believe that this 'law' enforced upon this woman is based on zealots and not the Nation of Islam. What do you think?

A woman bears a child out of wedlock. And according to local law, she is sentenced to death by stoning. Are we talking about modern times? Yes. Amina Lawal is a 32-year-old Nigerian woman facing just that sentence. Our focus tonight is what happens when fundamentalist Islamic law meets modern human rights?

Stoning. What does that mean exactly? In this case it would mean that a woman would be buried up to her waist and stones would be thrown at her head - until she dies. It is an ancient form of execution that one court in modern Nigeria has sentenced to carry out against 32-year-old Amina Lawal. Her crime? She became pregnant and bore a child out of wedlock. She was taken from her home by a vigilante gang and convicted by an all male court.

The legal system that sentenced Amina Lawal is known as Sharia law. It is the strict interpretation of Islamic justice and it is practiced in some form or another in several countries, or as in Nigeria's case, parts of that country. In the northern part of Nigeria, crime and corruption have been so rampant that many of the residents, mostly Moslem, see Sharia law as the best cure for those problems.

Zealots, fanatics call them what you will but for now it is their law, maybe the moral of the story is LET HE WHO WANTS NO MORE SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE.

I think man has made this law to keep women in this faith below them because they fear what women have to offer.  stoneing someone for haveing a baby out of wedlock is a sin in its self what about the baby!!!!!!!!!the child needs a mother!!

I totally agree with you, however, this is not something that Islam 'invented' or something that Islam believed only. In the old times under the Mosiac Law a woman who commited adultery had the penalty of being stoned too.

LDS beat me to it, but you do have a valid point in this:

what about the baby

I think most would look on it depending on how far a long her pregnancy was... for instance if she was just caught I do not think anyone would wonder if she was pregnant because of the act.

Well, look at the example of this woman in Nigeria of being accused of committing adultery. She was pregnant at the time of the sentence and because of Media pressure they didn't stone her yet, the baby was born and now they're waiting for him to stop breastfeeding to carry on the sentence. sad.gif I think this is terrible and awful! and it's murder!

Comments: It's important that every body knows the procedural laws attached to the substantive law of stoning which makes it a 'hanging punishment' to deter not to be applied adversely as could be seen in Islamic constitutions. And in the interest of knowledge anybody who assumes only women gets punished for adultery should check the Qur'an.Also note that fornication attracts flogging and banishment[for males at the time when possible].

The ruling on stoning to death in the Qur'an expressly includes the man before the woman. The ruling is not applied adversely on strict liability and is legally meant to be a private affair but a man is taken on his confession. This could be seen in numerous reports from the prophet where he asks the people to conceal their tales of woe and repent. To the average muslim, the substantive law of execution exists. But to the jurist it is practically hanging.More need to be said on this topic.
