Here is a poem I really like by Charles Swindoll about attitude:
QUOTE |
"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on my life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company ... a church ... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past ... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the string we have, and that is our attitude ... I am convinced that life is ten percent what happens to me and ninety percent how I react to it. And so it is with you ... we are in charge of our attitudes." |
Thanks for the poem Smudge, I think is good and very true. I liked this part particularly:

I agree with these sentiments. No matter what others do to me, I still make the choice whether to consider myself a victim or not. Far too often, I get upset and call people on their questionable ethics or inconsiderate actions because I want to prove a point, but deep inside, I know that nothing anybody does can really cause me psychological harm unless I allow it. That is not to say that psychological abuse does not occur; rather, I am saying that I have reached the point of understanding regarding how my mind works that I cannot blame anybody for my attitude or feelings except myself. That knowledge requires me to control my environment when possible, in order to maximize my mental and emotional efficacy. Everything that happens presents a choice, and every choice directly impacts subsequent events.
I agree with the poem. Attitude is fully about choices. Every person has a choice in everything. You don't have the choice to get treated rudely or not, but you have the choice how to respond. If your attitude is on the lighter side, your day will tend to be better because other peoples responses wont bother you as much. I try to keep my attitude good, and remember that I always have a choice, in every circumstance.
I would think that only to a certain extent do we have control over our lives. Everyday things, yes, but as a child, we can't really do anything, and are influenced by our surroundings. As we age, we gain more control over our life, but there are deeply seeded aspects to life which we cannot change. Not everything is controllable. Many things in life are set in stone, but day by day, you should be able to control the surface problems.
