Mormons In The News

Well, all I can say is this must be the last days. Check out the two links below. A Stake President in Montana arrested for attempting to have sex with a 14 year old girl and a recently released Bishop in Utah arrested for soliciting a prostitute. Other stories I have heard recently include a Stake President doctor in California arrested for molesting his patients and a Stake Patriarch in Canada arrested for years of child molestation.

Now, I know we are all human, regardless of your calling in the church. But where is the inspiration? Maybe the higher your calling, the harder Satan works on you. I used to look at the media attention given to the Catholic Church over their Priests molesting boys. I always thought that would never hapen in the LDS church. I guess I was wrong.

Mormon Church Leader Arrested in Sex Case

Sat Jun 26, 4:25 AM ET Add U.S. National - AP to My Yahoo!

BUTTE, Mont. - A leader in the Mormon Church was arrested in an Internet (news - web sites) sex sting after allegedly arranging to meet a 14-year-old girl in Idaho.

Clayton R. Hildreth, stake president of the Butte chapter of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was taken into custody Wednesday at a home in Boise.

Hildreth, 51, of Dillon, was charged in federal court with one felony count of using the Internet to knowingly attempt to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity. He was released on $50,000 bond after a hearing Friday.

Over the past two months, police said, Hildreth corresponded with Boise detectives posing as a 14-year-old girl in an online chat room and sent explicit images of himself.

"We are disturbed by the allegations that our local church leader may have engaged in improper conduct," the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said in a statement from Salt Lake City. "Individuals found to be so involved are released from ecclesiastical responsibilities."

It is sad indeed and what a bad reputation for the CHurch. Years ago when you say 'minister' or 'priest' it used to mean something that represented 'good', 'ethical' and 'trustworthy', but now it is associated with an eye of mistrust or even skepticism. Yes, the world is become more and more ripe and we know that after ripe comes rotten. Probably we are in the ferment stage.

A friend of mine whose husband was in the bishopric told me that the one thing that "higher office" leaders are most susceptible to is pornography and other sexually related problems. Not sure why that is, but it's just really really sad, and it angers me that these men fall so far.

I'm sure it has to do with satan working on those in high places. There is a quote attributed to Brigham Young (I'm not sure where, probably Journal of Discourses) that says the more knowledge you gain, you can be quite sure Satan is "nigh you!"

We have to be on our guard every day of our lives.

I always thought that this kind of things happened and will happen in our Church basically because we have all sort of people inside of it. The Church is not the exception. I heard many cases of sexual abuse in the Church and really freaky stories. In the old times the Church did not handle the abuse cases like they are doing it now, they were more careful about it or they wanted to keep it as secret as possible and of course the victims were the ones losing in the end. Very sad indeed.
