Title: Police in charge

Comments: I have for several months got the impression that the police here have become a law unto themselves. My observation has been reinforced by recent happenings within the police system. The first was the road block set up by the police a while back when they demanded a pay rise. Then there was the election of Inspector Seales whilst waiting to appear in court on a charge, then the recent three months leave granted to Mr Williams, when the Prime Minister is only allowed one month. Now the temporary appointment of a policeman with black clouds hanging over his head, to stand in for Mr Williams. What next. The politicians may as well declare the country a police state and be done with it, as it would now appear that the politicians have no say whatsoever in what the police want to do or is doing.

Title: Attitudes towards our local police officers

Comments: Complaining that the police officers are not doing their jobs properly in being unfair. Whilst I agree that we have many rogue policemen in the force some at the senior level of the force are considered corrupt.and set bad examples which reflect the attitudes and morals of those in the lower ranks. We must bear in mind that there are many police officers who still are honest and are responsible in their approach to undertaking their duty with some pride. The other important factor which we must bear in mind, and we must consider is the fact that where police officers fail to carry out their duties in a proper and effective manner that this could in most case be a lack of leadership, lack of proper training and the personal attitudes of their superiors. Another factor is the among of crimes being committed on a daily basis here which causes acute stress on young and inexperienced officers.Tarring all police officers with the same brush is wrong.

Title: Local Police and lawlessness

Comments: There is no other proof that is needed to demonstrate that we are promoting criminals within our police system in the light of the following. We have now three policemen holding senior positions within TTPS about to face the local courts on charges of lawlessness. Then we also have a well known notorious ex-policeman who have been making a mockery of our legal system for decades after his failed attempt of an attempted coup in 1990 and who leads a brigade of now recognized terrorist also facing charges of lawlessness. Bearing in mind that these are the only ones actually caught in the process of breaking the law, one has to ask the question of how many more of such criminal minded police do exist in our police system. It is no wonder that sensible and decent citizens of this nation is struggling to find the courage to trust, respect and assist our police.

Title: Fixing the nation

Comments: With reference to the letter in today's issue of the Express indicating that the police needs a big boost. I beg to differ on this issue.What the police needs is complete reformation. The whole of the police hierarchy needs replacing and so too does the commissioner of police. We can no longer rely on born and bred policemen here to protect the interest of the ordinary citizens. Not only that, many of our policemen are straying over to the criminal bandwagon and are breaking the law and becoming full time criminals.On the other hand many still portray a colonial mentality of protecting only those in authority,the elite,the well off and the corrupt rich. The local police are not stemming the flow of crime and general lawlessness. They have in fact adopted the same laid back attitudes of most of our senior politicians, and have too shown signs of deceitfulness and dabbling in corruption. They have become a law onto themselves and are allowed to do exactly as they pleases.They have in fact, now become part and parcel of our crime scenario,and perhaps unconsciously helping in the increase of more crimes here.They are not respected or supported by the general public.

Title: Wasting public money on increasing police manpower.

Comments: In my opinion, it would be just a waste of public money in increasing the police manpower here. Looking in at the present crime scenario it would appear that this is what is needed here to stop the flow of serious crimes and general lawlessness. However delving into the records one could see that despite increasing manpower in the past the same problems are still with us and at a much higher and destructive rate. All the sign are that policemen here have past their sell by date and our police system needs outside help and proper training and a sense of civic duty and patriotism. The police here need moral guidance and good and respectful effective management, and this can only be obtained from having and outside commissioner of police and a team of his supporters. Locally born and bred policemen have had decades to enforce law and order and halt the widespread criminal activities and general lawlessness on this island. So far they have failed. Adding more of such men to an already incompetent force will make no difference whatsoever. The lack of the essential qualities in many of our policemen is evident by the amount of so-called trained policemen now jumping on the criminal band wagon. The local police too has become a law onto themselves and need to be brought back in to line. This is evident in two major events in the recent years when they in conclusion with some politicians embarked on the plan which succeeded in getting the rid of Gibbs and his deputy, and the setting up of a national road block in 2015 demanding a pay rise. This again was part and parcel of the widespread corruption that exist here, as no police official was held in breach of the law for causing traffic chaos on this island.

Title: TTPS a law unto themselves

Comments: What government minister Clarence Rambharat failed to say when he talked about TTPS and the crime scenario here is that crime here has become a money spinner. It is the very reason why no constructive or remedial action is being taken to stem the flow of everyday murders and general lawlessness here,either by the police or the politicians whose hands are tied to some degree. The present and previous politicians are to be blamed for handing over full control of our crime scenario to TTPS. Yes the politicians hands are now tied because over the years they have gradually released their control and responsibility of the police system here,thus allowing the police to become a law unto themselves. Just look at the results after many decades of having a police force manned by local citizens who have lost the respect of the ordinary citizens because allegations of dabbling in corruption, without seemingly any official hindrance. After all if the ordinary citizens were and are still aware of what goes on within TTPS then the politicians too must be also aware of these wrong doings. One hasn't got to look too far within this set up to find senior officials of this department violating the legal system. We have at present at least three senior official within TTPS due to appear in court for alleged breaking the law however, these individuals are still operating as usual when in fact they should have been being suspended from duty What sort of example is this?. What about all these probes and investigations that the police were supposed to have started what happened to most of them such as the investigation into the affairs of Jack Warner?. What about the cost for renovating the Red House. What did it cost and whose bank account benefited from this project?. I am not a policeman but in my eyes there must be a hell of a lot of crime committed here by other government officials that need probing. However, the police continue to turn a blind eye to the illegal activities of the Mr Bigs and are quite prepared to pursue the lesser mortals for petty crimes they may have committed to reflect that they to some extent are protectors of our citizens. The whole of TTPS needs urgent reform and we need a outside commissioner of police and urgent outside help.Our politicians must again take control back from TTPS by introducing the correct and necessary are legislation to combat the battle against all serious crimes which now being used as a money spinner.

From the 1st August we're the TTPS is supposed to be wearing body cameras. How do you feel knowing you are being picked up on camera? I think it will be a good thing to see how police work goes but I hope they keep it on and not off like those cops in the USA that killed someone and when they did an investigation they found that their cameras were off.

Title: Body cameras

Comments: The use of body cameras here is just another expensive 'must have' gadget that our police desire.. The police here do not need these expensive toys.They want to get out of their cars and do regular foot patrols within our communities. And try to form relationships with community leaders.The underlying problem here is that the police are not trusted by our citizens and are not seen as protectors of the ordinary citizens.

Not only that, their past record shows that they have never made any real progress here where especially serious crime are I concerned since our independence despite the amount of new equipment and money spent at their demands. This new gadget is just another attempt to keep up with what police forces are doing in advanced developed country and is part and parcel of the crime money spinner that exist here. . I predict it will in the end make no difference whatsoever to our crime scenario and will again be recorded as a waste of public money.
