You may be able to live longer sure, but does living longer mean working longer? Not to be callous but there typically is an average age when people no longer learn new skills and trades. Even if you are working when you are 90 years old, the skills you would be using would probably be so far out of date as to almost be worthless.

I don't believe there is an credible evidence to suggest older people can't continue to learn. Instead what happens is they have a resistance to it. In fact, studies show that the more an older person uses their mind, the better they retain their capacity for thinking.

So, as we age, and remain healthy for longer periods of time, there isn't any reason we can't continue to work and contribute to society. Consider that 100 years ago people didn't live nearly as long as now and were physically and mentally old at much younger ages. So, it seems, ss we live longer as a people, we age at a slower rate mentally and physically. Therefore, there is no reason to expect that we still need to retire at 65, if we are living to 100.

I agree that there are exceptions to my statement above. However, the age that is commonly used within the western world is the age of 35. That is the average age where a person chooses to go through life with whatever skills and or abilities he or she already possesses. True, they can learn others. Will they do anything with the new skills however? Or would a company be eager to higher a middle age worker that has only basic skills when a 22 year old kid has those same skills and will be able to stay at the company longer. I'm not sure there are easy answers to that question. Think of it as rhetorical.

Answer to one: This might have been the case fifteen years ago, but in the job market of today ? Not the same world. Tech is changing and demanding a new learning curve for most all jobs. Also turnover is commonplace in most labor forces, no longer is the life time job the norm.

Answer to two: No longer does the company of today look for longevity in the worker and often the elderly can do the job required and is willing to do it for less. The world it is a changing.

The trend of Discussion is going off topic. The original subject was:

QUOTE (Neo)
What do you believe - is it possible to extend life beyond the normal? Do you believe that there are people among us that are much older than they appear to be - 100's of years old?

Everyone, please stay on Topic.

Immortality

I'm sorry Persephone, it's my fault.

Immortality is still spoke of as being something that we might want. I myself think it would be a very boring time. I'll be satisfied coming back or going somewhere else to be something else. It is my opinion that we have immortality now, just not in this form.
