What exactly is a "Mezzanine" and does it increase the value of a home?

A mezzanine is like a floor that is between two floors. Say your're going to the first floor up some stairs and on the way there is a little landing there with something that isn't quite a whole floor then that's a mezzanine. I think if its in the design of a house it can be cool.
