The End Of The Nation State?

Today their are voices telling us that the days of the nation state are over, that to ensure peace and prosperity in the future we must lay aside such a notion and work toward a global government. Such movements would include the EU, the African Union and the architects dreams of NAFTA leading to Canada and the USA subsumed into one econmoic and then political bloc...

Is national sovereignty important? What about world peace? Isn't unity a good thing?

What do you think?

I think sovereignity is extremely important. Each country's citizens have issues and concerns that are unique to them. Or, in other words, many of the most important concerns for someone in Northern Ireland are probably not the same as those for someone in Brazil. One global government really wouldn't be able to adequately provide for all citizens all over the world in a manner that best serves all of those people.

This is like the difference between working for a large company and a small one. In a large company, you really are pretty much just a number. Very easy to get "lost in the crowd." In a smaller company you are probably well known personally by the boss/owner. This has a direct effect on how you are treated as an employee. Same thing, in my opinion with global government vs. local government.

Security and Prosperity Partnership Of North America

I debated where to post this, and then found this thread. I believe it fits here.

The USA, Canada, and Mexico have already begun the processes whereby North America will become, essentially, one country. Our "mutual borders" would essentially be eliminated as "facilitation" strategies are implemented. This is far beyond NAFTA, because it includes securing each other's exterior borders. Can you see US military troops securing the border along Mexico's southern boundaries?

QUOTE
We are launching the next generation of our common security strategy to further secure North America and ensure the streamlined movement of legitimate travelers and cargo across our shared borders. To this end, Canada, the United States, and Mexico will work together to ensure the highest continent-wide security standards and streamlined risk-based border processes are achieved...

3) Further streamline the secure movement of low-risk traffic across our shared borders

    * Develop and implement a border facilitation strategy to build capacity and improve the legitimate flow of people and cargo at ports of entry within North America.

    * Identify, develop, and deploy new technologies to advance our shared security goals and promote the legitimate flow of people and goods across our borders.

I believe that Nationalism has a very important role in history. True nationalism brings a large community together, forging it into a single entity. Thus we have nations such as the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, and Russia. All of these nations have separate individual parts, whether they are states, provinces, or whatever. The nation can work together to accomplish great things. Of course, it can also be used to accomplish horrible things.

But one thing it does is actually reduce warfare. In the early 1600s, a great and horrible war raged in Europe. It was the 30 Years War. It was primarily played out between various principalities in what is now Germany. It wasn't until the late 1800s that Germany became a single nation, and those principalities stopped fighting each other.

I certainly hope that nationalism is not coming to an end.

I completely agree. While I think peace and unity and cooperation are wonderful, national sovereignty is vital to the freedom of a people. In keeping with national sovereignty, we retain the rights as cultural and social groups of people to live our lives the way we please and to rule ourselves however we see.

In middle eastern countries, even the ones that are democratic, they still vote in clergy as their rulers. If they want to be ruled by their religion, then so be it, let them. But in the west, we prefer to keep them separate. At the same time, we prefer not to behead those of different religions, and thus make our country free for all religions and cultures. But other countries may no like that and thus merging into a one world country would essentially cause more problems between people, not ease them. The lose of national sovereignty takes away the peoples voice, and that doesn't help anyone.

I know, I know, it's from World Net Daily. But that doesn't mean it isn't true, that this organization is moving forward with plans to merge the North American continent into one unifed country.

North American merger topic of secret confab Meeting on integration of U.S., Mexico, Canada brings together top officials

WASHINGTON - Raising more suspicions about plans for the future integration of the U.S., Canada and Mexico, a high-level, top-secret meeting of the North American Forum took place this month in Banff - with topics ranging from "A Vision for North America," "Opportunities for Security Cooperation" and "Demographic and Social Dimensions of North American Integration."

While the conference took place a week ago, only now are documents about participants and agenda items leaking out.

Despite "confirmed" participants including Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, former Secretary of State George Shultz, former Central Intelligence Agency Director R. James Woolsey, former Immigration and Naturalization Services Director Doris Meissner, North American Union guru Robert Pastor, former Defense Secretary William Perry, former Energy Secretary and Defense Secretary James Schlesinger and top officials of both Mexico and Canada, there has been no press coverage of the event. The only media member scheduled to appear at the event, according to documents obtained by WND, was the Wall Street Journal's Mary Anastasia O'Grady.

Perhaps the most blistering criticism came earlier this summer from Lou Dobbs of CNN - a frequent critic of President Bush's immigration policies.

"A regional prosperity and security program?" he asked rhetorically in a recent cablecast. "This is absolute ignorance. And the fact that we are - we reported this, we should point out, when it was signed. But, as we watch this thing progress, these working groups are continuing. They're intensifying. What in the world are these people thinking about? You know, I was asked the other day about whether or not I really thought the American people had the stomach to stand up and stop this nonsense, this direction from a group of elites, an absolute contravention of our law, of our Constitution, every national value. And I hope, I pray that I'm right when I said yes. But this is - I mean, this is beyond belief."

The Of Nation State

You are referring to the New World Order first spoken of by George H.W. Bush. Is it therefore a coincidence that there is so much suspicion that his son was made president by a court? Conspiracy theories abound about the whole subject of a one world government, but history has shown that the differences in cultures aren't going to be that easy to overcome, and that you can't really depend on a government to keep the peace. We have the U.N. and look at how much division there is in it. The European Union has not shown itself to be capable of bringing about a harmonious union between it's member states in it's political and financial issues. The United States is really just a union of states and they can't always get along on everything even under a federal government that claims authority over them all. How often do they fight over who has what authority? A one world government will always face it's opposition and I believe that the wars that will be started if it's ever tried will prevent such a thing.

Global Society?

If UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown had his way, that's exactly what we'd get. He says that 'now is the time' to pursue a global society and that there is a 'unique opportunity' to realize what appears to be the socialist dream world. Interesting how Gordon waited until after the election to bring this little nugget of joy to the table.
