Why They Abuse Substances

Why They Abuse Substances

From what I've heard people who end up abusing substances do it because they either do not care or want to reach a state where they do not care. They do not care about no one and more especially themselves. Really it is all about self-pity.

Substances Abuse Why

Most people don't start out abusing drugs purposefully. Most start off using to be "cool" or to kill pain with legal drugs and end up moving towards the harder stuff. Alcoholics drink to kill the pain, drug users usually get addicted before they realize they are hooked and thus aren't trying to drown pain, they are going for their high that they "must" have. Many alcoholics start drinking to kill pain and to forget something. In their cases, it may very well be self-pity related.

People start using drugs because it offers them something they don't get from other aspects of their life.

Drugs make them feel good. When I say the term drugs, I include alcohol and prescription drugs that are abused in that.

Thats it. After a few uses, in some cases after the first use, the drug abuser is addicted. Either chemically or habitually (mentally).

The temporal "good" feeling is just a small consequence of the actual use of the drug, the fact is that people who abuse drugs have lots of issues: abuse, low self esteem, depression, etc that causes them to use something (in this case drugs) to feel good for a while. It is not *the* reason they use it, there are underlined problems that they carry that causes them to reach that stage of self-destruction. Those problems need to be addressed in order for the person to recover so no, I do not think people use drugs "just because it makes them feel "good".

So, you believe that most people started using drugs because they WANT to DIE or to be self-destructive?

Why would you think that?

Have you ever been addicted to drugs? Has anyone that is posting in this thread?

I thought I made my point clear. They use drugs to cover up their feelings of low self esteem and self destruction behavior.

Because as far as I am concerned, a happy, satisfied and healthy person (mind and body) do not start using drugs just like that. I think is obvious. spock.gif

In other words... It makes them feel good.

Honey, the highs are euphoric in nature. Cocaine, for example, makes you feel all-powerful, like there is nothing you can't achieve.

I know what you are saying but in my opinion is not as simplistic and cut and dry as you stated before "just because it makes them feel good" (maybe is your short version of the story). There is much more in the issue and that's what I was trying to explain.

The question is: "Why they abuse Substances" and as I stated is because they suffer of a lot of problems such as depression, low self-esteem, abuse, etc.
