Football: The Offside Rule - Page 2

laugh.gif Well I look forward to those changes, even the sudden death rule in overtime I think is also harsh, but that may apply to certain Cups. Whatever the change I think change is good, after all, we live in a technology advancing world, why not take advantage of it?

Changes have already been made here, where the golden goal is no more.

QUOTE
- Law 10 - Method of Scoring: With regard to the method for determining the winner of a match, the IFAB ruled in favour of extra-time, consisting of two periods of no more than 15 minutes each, followed by kicks from the penalty mark. As a result, matches will no longer be decided by "golden goal" or 'silver goal".

Thank goodness, and it is good that the last Euro Cup was the last to use the silver rule. Those sudden goal wins can be just as unfair as some silly referee telling a player who is about to strike that he is offside.

Here is an interesting article written by current FIFA President Joseph Blatter. It addresses the current rule and what subtle changes can be made to make the rule better. But the bottom line is that offside cannot be done away with because it would make the game less technical and require less skill. Enjoy!

You can't get rid of offside, it would ruin the game. It would change it totally because you would have forwards who camp around the goal box.

I'm actually a fan of the golden goal rule in preference to penalties. Having played football for over 15 years, penalties are a horrible way to lose a game. I find they also encourage weaker teams to use negative, defensive tactics in big games. The thing I like about golden goal is that encourages a team to go out there and actually win the game, not hold out for penalties.

While penalties are exciting to watch, how often do we see the better side lose shootouts? Far too often in my opinion.

I agree that you cannot get rid of the offside rule. However the golden goal does not encourage teams to go out and attack. Quite the reverse ...it encourages team to defend even more as they know if they concede they are defeated.
There are bigger problems in football right now. English football biggest problem right now is players diving and cheating to gain penalties and free kicks. I have to say the foreign players are the worse for this. Some think they cannot be tackled at all.
