Iowa's governor signs nation's most restrictive abortion ban into law. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed legislation Friday prohibiting nearly all abortions in the state after a fetal heartbeat is detected. The law, which goes into effect July 1 if the courts don't stop it, will require physicians to conduct an abdominal ultrasound to test for a fetal heartbeat on any woman seeking an abortion. A fetal heartbeat can be detected about six weeks into a pregnancy and often before a woman realizes she’s pregnant, experts said. Ref. USAToday.
The protests against this bill started up before the Governor even signed it into law. I remember the protestors telling the Governor they would see her in court. I do not think that this law will stay in the books before it is struck down by the courts as being unconstitutional.
Abortion is not protected under the Iowa constitution, state Supreme Court rules. The Iowa Supreme Court on Friday overruled a 2018 decision that protected abortion under the state constitution. In a fractured decision that reverses a lower court's decision to block a 24-hour waiting period before an abortion, the court said the previous ruling that established a constitutional right to an abortion "Insufficiently recognizes that future human lives are at stake.” Source 4c.
