I have opened this Thread for those of you who have seen the movie "Knowing". Did you see any familiarity to the Movie: Knowing & Brigham Young's Doctrine? Of course you will pick up many other things there but I want to focus on religious ideas here.

To review just the movie: Source 1

Doctrine Youngs Brigham and Knowing Movie

Well, one of the things I can think of is Brigham Young thoughts about people living in the Moon and the Sun (as a matter of fact Joseph Smith was the one who taught this first). One of the many statements on the matter:

QUOTE
"Who can tell us of the inhabitants of this little planet that shines of an evening, called the moon?...when you inquire about the inhabitants of that sphere you find that the most learned are as ignorant in regard to them as the ignorant of their fellows. So it is in regard to the inhabitants of the sun. Do you think it is inhabited? I rather think it is. Do you think there is any life there? No question of it; it was not made in vain." (Journal of Discourses, vol. 13, p. 271)

I was also thinking that we are "chosen" (if we fulfill the requirements) to become Gods in our planets and in this way create "life" as we "start over" again, the end of the movie reminded me of that.

I was thinking more about the Adam & Eve Doctrine we have been covering here about other worlds being populated with an 'Adam' and 'Eve' and the process being more routine than we may have considered.

It also came to my mind the teaching that Adam was born in "another planet" and placed here on Earth.

Yes, I also like the closeness of families being together forever - that was emphasized a lot. Now back to the Adam & Eve part - it was unique to this film that they were:

1. Dropped along with others who would act as Adam and Eve
2. They were dropped in a world that looked Terrestrial but the Tree of Life was already there. Interesting interpretation.

Do you think that our prosperity will be started in a similar way - taken to a planet as Adam and Eve?

Not sure. But if the theory holds, who will take them and what happens with the ones that were not chosen for the job?

Movie Knowing & Brigham Young's Doctrine

I watched this movie last night. I didn't relate much of it to Brigham Young's teachings specifically, but I did see a lot of parallels with Eternal principles.

One thing I specifically noted was how the "angels" appeared as they drifted up from earth. They didn't really have wings, but the glow about them looked like wings.

I noted that the "chosen" ones were the ones who could hear the Whisperers. They were told what to do and where to go to be ready for their salvation. Those who couldn't, or didn't hear were not saved. But then, the indications were that it was only children who could hear, and there was nothing that anyone could specifically do in order to hear. This then indicates that those who were saved were "predestined" and everyone else was damned.

As for the Adam and Eve portions, I really did like that. It was not very similar to Brigham Young's teachings in that he taught that Adam and Eve were exalted beings who came to the Terrestial earth in order to make their bodies, along with the Earth, Telestial so that they could have children.

I found the Tree of Life representation to be very similar to the description in the Book of Mormon. From this I think that the writer must have some Mormon background.

Overall, I really liked the movie, and the similarities to my doctrinal understanding was just an added treat.

Good that you caught those things. I think based on your school of thought this movie will give you what you want to see, in some ways directly and in others symbolically. For instance some bloggers see the movie as being a take on Scientology and Occult beliefs mixed with that of the Alien Brotherhood. The Tree of Life and the description is actually not unique to the Book of Mormon but is described as such in other texts. Determinism seemed to be the main factor of the movie, what you do is determined already - this is the way the writers seek to explain the happenings of the earth and all we are given for the 'end' is a chance to start over. I took the below screenshot from the movie:
