Dealing with autism
"I have never had a conversation with my son. He doesn't even look at me and he only speaks when it is necessary. I am frustrated and I am unhappy." These were the words of Christine Nicholas as she spoke to the Express about her autistic son, Stefon. Ref. Source 7
My heart goes out to this family and to this precious child. One of the many things that caught my attention is when the mother said:

The woman stressed that the general public and even medical professionals are not sympathetic to her son and simply think he's disruptive. "Doctors and nurses are supposed to understand autism and apparently they do not," the mother said angrily. |
For those interested we have several Boards and sites that deal with Autism / ADHD, etc. Some sites are specific to Autism related issues in Trinidad & Tobago:
* TTSpecialKids.com
* Our In-house Autism Board
* Mountain of Sand Forum
There is a great need for not only awareness in this country but actual places you can go during the week where there are CARING and QUALIFIED people to handle these children. The local ASTT has some good things going but not often enough and not wide enough, most of it is very general. The government should be ensuring that qualified trained personnel are paid good and available for parents to bring their children. The ASTT should not have to be going around begging corporate enterprises for help to sustain itself.
Keep in mind when you meet A child with Autism you meet "A" child with Autism, no two are alike and each has their challenges that sometimes need one on one interaction. Not one teacher / therapist to five or ten.
Do you have a child with Asperger? Do you teach a child who you think has Asperger? I think this is one of those conditions that is very hard to diagnose because Aspies (as we gently call those with Aspergers) are high functioning in almost all areas. It is the social aspect that they struggle with.
My son is high functioning as well and many times I thought he has Asperger but as I shared in another thread, we don't know exactly what he has neither the doctors are in a rush to re-diagnose.
Many may have this and not realize it. I believe a lot of individuals discover their fits of anger and other 'interesting' patterns of behavior too late in life. It does lead them to check with a professional and the result ends up being that they are diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. It needs to be treated EARLY.
