Top U.S. Lab regulator replaced in wake of incidents with bioterror pathogens

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has replaced its long-time director of national lab regulation in the wake of several high-profile incidents involving bioterror pathogens and an internal review that identified areas of improvement for the oversight program, USA TODAY has learned. The CDC, in a statement Tuesday, declined to say why it replaced Robbin Weyant on Nov. 9 as director of the agency's Division of Select Agents and Toxins, which regulates hundreds of U.S. Labs working with the organisms that cause anthrax, plague, Ebola and other deadly diseases that are deemed to pose bioterror risks. The change occurred 18 days after the completion of an internal CDC review of the national lab oversight program that was launched after a USA TODAY NETWORK investigation prompted congressional probes and revealed CDC's inspectors have allowed labs to keep experimenting despite failing to meet key safety requirements on inspection after inspection, sometimes for years. CDC is keeping secret the details of its mishaps with deadly germs

The Centers for Disease Control is keeping secret large swaths of information about dozens of recent lab mishaps involving some of the world's most dangerous bacteria and viruses, according to documents obtained by USA TODAY in an ongoing effort to unveil safety issues long shielded from public view. The heavily redacted documents USA TODAY obtained show that CDC scientists apparently lost a box of deadly and highly regulated influenza specimens and experienced multiple other potential exposures involving viruses and bacteria. CDC Director Fitzgerald resigns

Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention resigned from her position on Wednesday. The move comes one day after POLITICO reported Fitzgerald's purchase of tobacco stock after she assumed the position of the nation's public health agency.

HHS released a statement noting the resignation was accepted Wednesday morning.

"Dr. Fitzgerald owns certain complex financial interests that have imposed a broad recusal limiting her ability to complete all of her duties as the CDC Director. Due to the nature of these financial interests, Dr. Fitzgerald could not divest from them in a definitive time period," the statement read. Ref. CNN.
