Reading Books About Philosophy To Make Wise Choices

If I go to the library and start reading books about philosophy do you think I could start making wise choices or mature faster or will I just end up being weird. I guess I'm asking if the words of philosophers in the past really have the same wisdom for today.

Well, that depends not only on which philosophers you read, but how you approach it.

Or to put it another way, many philosophers of the past have a great deal of wisdom, and are worth listening to. But it is more up to the student than those dead men whether or not those words impart wisdom at all.

Well, I always found Taoism to be interesting and with the author Benjamin Hoff. That of his books the The Tao of Pooh and The Te of Piglet, as he is using the characters from the Adventures of Winnie the Pooh to explain what Taoism is. It does I feel help one to become wise or at least lead one to look more deeply.

Daishain,

Very well put. My Greek ancestors imparted much wisdom… that mankind seems to have mostly ignored. The same can be said about dozens of other philosophers from other times and civilizations. Wise men that we, human kind, listen to not at all.

While I can agree that Greek philosophers are often ignored, with the most famous generally being Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. They are worth looking into and learning about what they spoke on.

I believe the issue is simply many might not find Greece interesting except for its mythology, many don't even talk about them except to credit them for foundations of democracy.

Thomas,

Greek philosophers are not ignored. They are studied as much as any I think. The problem I was alluding to is that we study but we do not learn. And when we do learn we do not listen, we ignore what we've learned. We do this as a species and we do it with all philosophers of all civilizations and eras.
