It is likely they are pleading not guilty in an attempt to get a plea bargain. They probably don't really expect to get off scot free, but they hope to get a reduced sentence of some kind. Pleading not guilty is pretty much standard in our justice system.

Well, he pleaded guilty and pretty much is possible that he is going to get life in prison...why he had to do kill his own wife in such a way?. This is so sad.

'I shot Lori': Mark Hacking pleads guilty in brutal slaying of his wife

Mark Douglas Hacking, the Salt Lake husband who acted grief-stricken last summer over his missing wife while a huge manhunt was under way, admitted Friday to killing his wife, 27-year-old Lori Soares Hacking.

"Never in my wildest nightmares I thought I'd hear her husband say he intentionally shot her like he did today," a tearful Thelma Soares, Lori's mother, told members of the media after the hearing.
Eraldo Soares, Lori's father, said hearing Hacking admit that he killed his daughter was "like a knife going right through my heart."
Hacking, 28, handcuffed and in a tan jail jumpsuit, appeared amid heavy security before 3rd District Judge Denise Lindberg. He pleaded guilty to first-degree felony murder in exchange for the dismissal of three counts of second-degree felony obstruction of justice...

Six to life: Judge orders Mark Hacking to prison for killing wife

Well the case appears to be over. I just wish it was more along the lines of 40 years - minimum, instead of 6. Then, of course, he could get out earlier than 6 years, I suppose.

I am glad that he got a prison sentence. I am disgusted by some other aspects of it, though. I will start a topic elsewhere about that.

Well, it is a good start, but I think life in prison should be exactly that. Life in prison. You go and don't come out until you die.

Well, I thought they would give him life in prison, 30 years seem like a "short"sentence taking in consideration how he killed his wife.

Officially, he did receive life in prison. He will get his first parole hearing in 30 years. Many places in the US, most I think, allow parole for all sentences including life. Some places have adopted a life in prison without the possibility of parole sentence. To me, all life in prison sentences should be like that.

Thanks for the clarification Tena. I thought that because of the type of crime he committed he would be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, I am shocked that he would even be allow to a "hearing" after 30 years.
