I don't want to cover other athletes in Walcott's Thread so I will say for him that in my opinion he had the support he needed - a coach, a field and a stick(Javelin) the rest is all mental. Even he confessed he was fighting himself and the javelin. Even if he threw his best on that day it would not have beaten Thomas Röhler's 90.30m which was just 27cm short of the world record.
