There is good and bad in everything but this topic is why religion is bad for society. To answer this objectively we will first need to to determine what is "Religion" and how it has negatively affected society in history. In fact, this thread does not ask the "If" but the "Why". Essentially religion is a system of belief and I will categorize it here to organized religion. Historically religion has done some good but what has been done in the name of religion, from my perspective, has caused more death and destruction than any good I can think about. While a few have helped the poor and established civility in society it does not discount orders sent out by religious edicts to slaughter millions simply because they did not agree with a particular religious stance. A few good turns does not justify torture and murder and therefore that makes it bad for society.
As others have stated, the question presupposes that religion is bad for society. Looking at only organized religions from the outside, there has been much death and destruction. But is any human institution any better? How many people have been killed to spread Capitalism? Socialism? Democracy? Dictatorship? Oligarchy? Monarchy? Feudalism? I mean any idea people have that solves some problem for them, they then want to spread to others, violently if need be, so as to try to benefit society. A mass of people don't fight to spread something because it is bad for them (From their perspective). It is easy to be misled and think you are helping someone when in fact you are causing more harm. I don't think we can blame the institution for those faults. That blame lays squarely on the shoulders of its leaders at that time. As people realize what is going on, they try to improve and usually something better comes about. I don't think it is fair to look back and say that religion is bad for society because so many have been killed for it, because there would have been war using some other mantle had religion not been around. It is just a cover for bad leaders to abuse their power. I think religion in its intended form is beneficial to society as it gives us a moral ground from which to interact with others and the world around us.
That's because they have the religion boards with counter topics, for example: Why Religion Is Good For Society. I can't remember if I said anything here but let me tell you religion is bad when it dictates the rights of other who aren't part of that religion, for that reason religion can be bad for society.
Religion per se is not bad. It is the application thereof. One of the meanings of religion I found can be nterepreted as follows "A pursuit or interest followed with great devotion". That leads me to believe that is is not only belief in an entity. Like is was mentioned before that people have killed in the name of ideologies. Take an easy example like the French revolution. Aristocracy believed it as their right to rule and the peasants wanted freedom (More accurately they wanted food). This turned into a big spectacle and I am sure most of us know what happened.
I am of the view that we as a species are a confrontational and violent species. Therefore religion is not to blame for the violence and hatred. It is merely a tool used justify this hatred and violence. Older religions from the pagan era openly embraced violence and warfare. It made people strong and promised a good afterlife. This view obviously became unpopular with the rise of Christianity and later Islam as this was again a peasant revolt against authority and the strong military governments of the time. Now we sit with religions that "Embrace" love and yet we still with issues of hatred and violence. That is because no matter your beliefs, we are inherently a confrontational and violent species. How to justify your nature with your newly held beliefs then… Well let us call the other heretics or infidels and start killing them for being devil worshipers. All we are doing is breeding more violence.
Religion is good. Especially for those who do not have the will power to face the possibility that there is no life after death and their lives are ultimately meaningless in the grand scheme of things. It is a sort of a safe haven for them to retreat to when life becomes overwhelming. It is a great comfort to be able to rely and pray to an external all powerful entity. It help to motivate you knowing that he/she /it has your back covered.
Religion is bad when you become so obsessed with your ideas that anything that strays from it is heresy. It becomes dangerous when you claim things that you can not substantiate and attempt to ridicule those that do try and often succeed in proving those claims. When you break down someone else's character because they do not conform to your ideologies.
Let and let live is my saying… but there is that pesky confrontational nature that is getting in oor way!

Religion has its good and bad but considering the amount of people put into slavery, subjected to torture and killed I can't say religion is all that good. Religion teaches a few moral values and then it stops there all the rest is about selfish gain, getting money from people and segregating.
Religion is neither inherently good nor bad. It can however be said that their potential includes both miracles and disasters.
Its a bit like a dictatorship. A sufficiently wise, just, and ethical leader with absolute power has the potential to make his nation a paradise to live in, able to make good decisions without the incessant inefficiency and arguments that comes with more democratic processes. But an unethical and/or incompetent leader in such a position will quickly drag his people down the opposite path.
The thing is, just like with dictators and most other positions of power, those in charge of religions seem to end up being those interested in the role for all the wrong reasons.
