Spider-man 2: The Game

I played this game when it first came out, a day or so before the movie came out, and I have to say I like it. Given my like for the Spider-Man series as a whole, and the hype surrounding this game, my expectations were high - and I wasn't disappointed. Although not without it's flaws, the game plays almost like an interactive movie.

The game's plotline loosely follows that of the movie; Spider-Man encounters Otto Octavius, aka Doc Ock, who becomes physically and mentally attached to cybernetic arms thanks to a lab accident. As Ock threatens the city, Spider-Man must try and destroy him, and get the girl.

That's just the start though. The game does a nice job of blending two distinct elements of Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire's movie Spidey and the "classic" Spidey of the comics. It does this by using the movie actors Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and Alfred Molina to reprise their movie roles, and retaining the look and feel of the movie, while adding classic Spider-Man characters and villains such as Mysterio, the Shocker, and Black Cat. One other character that must be mentioned is the Tour Guide, the voice of the wonderful Bruce Campbell, who guides Spider-Man (and you) around the game, giving useful and often hilarious advice and help.

The game plays similarly to the Grand Theft Auto series. You, as Spider-Man, have the whole of Manhattan as your playground, and when not on a story mission you can pretty much go anywhere and do anything. To coin a phrase, you can do whatever a spider can.

To actually get around the city, Spider-Man can walk, but that's boring. He can sprint, or leap, or even hitch a ride by jumping onto the top of cars, but by far the coolest way to get around is to web-swing. As long as Spider-Man is within range of something he can web from (anything taller than him, a building, even a light pole or a tree) he can fire a webline and begin swinging. Then you can have him web to and from other buildings and objects and given the level of control you have, you can make Spider-Man pull off some impressive aerial acrobatics.

You can take Spidey from the ground to the top of the tallest building in the city, and you can travel to and from notable Manhattan landmarks like Central Park, the Empire State Building, Roosevelt Island, and even over the water to Liberty Island, and yes, once there, you can climb right to the top of Lady Liberty if you so desire.

The side missions can get a little repetitive, but, hey, you"re a superhero, right? You have to protect the city, and you do just that. As he swings around the city, Spidey will encounter different citizens who want to talk to him. Go up to one and they"ll give you a mission to you; this will either be something simple like taking a guy to hospital, or something more difficult like destroying walking battle tanks. There aren't that many of these mission types though, but playing them between the story missions means you won't get bored of them. As well as taking missions from citizens needing help, Spider-Man will also occasionally happen upon a crime in progress which you can choose to sort out if you desire. As well as that, Spider-Man can also head to Mary-Jane's apartment and do timed missions from her, or swing by the pizza parlour and deliver pizzas, or even drop into the Daily Bugle and get photo-taking missions for J Jonah Jameson.

Plus, during the game you"ll acquire hero points which are credits you can use at local "Spidey Stores" where you can purchase upgrades to Spidey's powers and abilities. By the end of the game, Spider-Man is one heck of a force of nature.

The story missions move along in the form of chapters, when each chapter starts you have a specific objective (or set of objectives) and a given amount of free time. Your objective destination is marked on your onscreen map, and when you take Spider-Man there, the story mission will be triggered. While some of these merely progress the story (at one point you have to get to Dr. Octavius" apartment just so he can meet Peter Parker) most of them lead you into some serious action, right up to defeating Doc Ock himself.

All in all a fantastic game that any fan of either Spider-Man or GTA-type games should try.

Game Spider-man

The game is actually called, 'Spider-Man 2: The Movie' or did you just add that on because it is based on the movie? By the way, which gaming console did you review this for?

I personally enjoyed this game a lot as well. The freedom to be able to move around and go where you want to is a big bonus, rather than being assigned to just play the missions. The gameplay for the Xbox was quite smooth, and even though I have already beaten the game, I still enjoy playing it again and again, prob because I'm a Spider-man fan. I recommend it to anyone into fighting games as well.

To be honest the game is actually called "Spider-Man 2: The Game," but there have been several games called "Spider-Man 2" before, for the earlier consoles. I called this "Spider-Man 2: The Movie" because it's based on the 2004 movie.

The version I've played is the Xbox version, but it's available for all three current consoles, and from what I've heard the gameplay is similar on all 3. The main difference is slight graphical improvements on the GameCube and Xbox versions because they have slightly more advanced hardware than the PS2.

Yea, I got a question for you Paul.

I was wondering how exactly you are supposed to be able to 'tie down' all of Doc Oc's arms (the four machine tentacles)? is there some way to do it? cuz I can get 3 of them and by the time I get the fourth, the other 3 break out and just rail me (kill me). Got any hints on how to kill him faster on the last fight you have with him? thx man.

Arthyr, assuming you're referring to the very final battle with Doc Ock (where you also disable the energy field switches), securing his tentacles is VERY difficult. I have managed to beat him, but only once, and in doing so I was so close to the edge that if Spidey had taken another hit it would have been game over. Anyhow, here's how I did it:

For the first half of the battle, ignore him and take out the switches, then once they're all taken care of, Ock will come after Spidey. Get down on a lower level with lots of space around for Spidey to move without worrying about falling off a ledge, and get into position so Spidey is facing Ock.

Just before Ock attacks the tentacle(s) that will attack light up BEFORE they attack. Almost as soon as the tentacle lights up, Spidey's spidersense will go off (you'll see the "glow" around his head).

AS SOON as you see that, hit the Dodge button (B on the Xbox, Circle on the PS2). Make sure to watch for the spidersense, NOT the glowing tentacle. Once Spider-Man has dodged successfully, hit the web button (Y on the Xbox, Triangle on the PS2) to webtie the tentacle that attacked.

It's all about timing the rhythm of the first dodge and then the web. You HAVE to get that first dodge correct, and the only way to do that is to time it with Spidey's spidersense.

Repeat the move for all four tentacles, then once Doc Ock is tied down run in (holding the sprint button down all the time) and whale on him with the attack button (X on Xbox, Square on PS2) as many times as you can before he gets free.

Repeat this set of moves until he dies. Definitely not easy, but well worth it in the end.

This game is much better than the previous one on the Playstation 1.
I've got Spider-Man 2: The Game for the playstation 2 and the freedom is a great plus, also it's more realistic because in the previous one you could swing from the sky, whereas this time you must attach your web to a building or other object.
The downside is that the side-missions sometimes get repetitive.
