This is very sad. This guy is not only talented in music but he also held many leadership positions in the LDS Church.
I think lots of pedophiles seek out positions that will get them closer to young children and teenagers. With all the priests and youth leaders being caught, it seems more likely that these people were pedophiles before they were leaders in the church and sought these places of leadership to get them in a position to molest children, or worse. Its very sad if you can't trust anyone in leadership any where any more. Should we be less trusting of everyone around us? I am a trusting person, but my child will not be alone with someone I don't know intimately and personally. Not until I can be sure I can trust them.
Don't be surprised by Kon replying to it, it was my mistake because I put it on the mature board instead of the LDS mature board Anyhow, there is an update on the story, feel free to share your thoughts:

Criminal charges were filed today against a former member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Robert Matthews faces several sexually related counts relating to allegations he took pictures of young boys who were naked. Matthews is from Orem and the allegations surround an incident in July in Spanish Fork Canyon, but investigators are concerned there could be more victims. The charges filed today include three misdemeanors and four second degree felonies. Matthews is accused of taking pictures and video of four young boys who were skinny dipping at a hot springs in Spanish Fork Canyon and then later showing the video to the boys. That involves the felony charges of sexual exploitation of a minor because it is considered child pornography. The second involves misdemeanor charges of lewdness involving a child. That's because Matthews is accused of not wearing any clothes himself during the incident. Matthews' attorney says his client is getting a lot of support from family and friends and will fight the charges in court. John Easton, Defense Attorney: "I think it's important to note he's presumed innocent until proven guilty. And that there has been no allegations of any kind whatsoever of any inappropriate touching of any minor whatsoever and we'll just have to see what happens in court." |
I would assume he would be excommunicated for this. I found it surprising to find out that members convicted of felonies are not automatically excommunicated.
Well, he plead guilty and is facing several years in prison although I hardly doubt he will be sentenced to 10 years.

A former member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir faces up to 10 years in federal prison after pleading guilty Monday to a charge of possessing child pornography. Robert Matthews, 52, of Orem, appeared in U.S. District Court to admit he possessed images of child pornography that were sent over the Internet. His plea comes as part of a plea bargain struck with federal prosecutors. Prosecutors say they will recommend the lower end of the federal sentencing guidelines for Matthews' acceptance of responsibility in the case. Sentencing is set for Oct. 9. Matthews was indicted by a federal grand jury in October of last year. Charges were also filed in state court on four felony counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and three counts of lewdness involving a child, a misdemeanor. The state charges were dismissed in lieu of the federal case. According to police, Matthews was arrested Sept. 28, 2006, after they received evidence that he swam naked with four young boys during a trip to Diamond Fork Hot Springs in July of that year. While on the trip, Matthews took pictures of the nude swim and later processed the images on his computer... |
Rather off topic, but... Tortog, you should check the thread "Another Mormon Connection to a Heinous Crime" located here: https://www.bordeglobal.com/foruminv/index....showtopic=11266 Sadly (because of the cases) it is 4 pages long! That's why I just cannot understand when I hear someone saying "Oh, he/she is fine is a member of the Church". Maybe that was a good "reputation" card years ago, not anymore, not on my books! |
