Calling All Doge Dakota Owners

Need to fix those pesky expensive front bearing hubs?

Best deal in town for the hub is ball bark $170 CDN, the stealership is $220 cdn.

The mechanics in every shop will tell you heck their sealed bearing now choice but to replace the whole unit. They are sadly mistaken, big time! the only trick is you have to tell them what bearing will fit your hub.

Here are the bearing parts you will require.

Timken "set 49" harder to find I found in Canada and a bit more monies.

Carquest BCA 513058 Bearing set.

I understand that at "pepboys" the part is FW115 or CRFW115.(I think this is a USA chain store)

This is for two wheel drive with or with out ABS on the front.

The part is actually two bearings in a sleeve which is what you will be removing later on.

To change remove the tire.

Remove the anchor bolts on the brake caliper. I set the caliper up on the idler arm out of harms way. Now the hub assembly is clear.(4x4 is more work and you have to remove stabilizer arm that needs to torqued to 137 or 145 lbs on replacement can not recall which)

Remove hub spindle bolt a good johnson bar will be of aid on this.(Keep nut for reinstall)

*Once off you will need to remove the retainer clip a small set of needle nose are great for this.

Now either heat it with a torch for 10 minutes then place a bolt with a good steel washer and pound it out with a heavy maul/sledge hammer.

Once out clean it up and insure no debris in the hub.

Place the bearings in the freezer for 4 hours and heat the hub in the oven set at 300 F. You do not what it hotter as that could end up damaging the rubber seals on the bearings.

Now you only have one chance and you will have to work fast as you have a .004 inch clearance now between the bearing and hub. Place the bearing in the hub and push in straight it should go pretty easy. replace retainer clip and reinstall. *

The between the asterisks can be replaced with the steps below.

remove hub take to machine shop and have them press the bearing out and put the new bearing in. Your local garage can like provide this service also. Cost 25 to 40 Dollars per side takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on how bad the bearing is.

the cost of doing this for me was $ 40 for the bearing at Carquest and $ 25 for the bearing removal and installation. Total $65 vs 170 plus tx for the hub. A huge savings for all.

The bearing hub nut should be torqued to 175 lbs prior replacing the brakes and tires and us a bit of red lock thread to keep nut from loosening off.

Ask your mechanic he would like do the remove and reinstall of the hub and place in the bearing for you if you bring the part with you. add ballpark 2 hours labour to the part price. Still saves you money.

Any one know of other big savers?

Ball joint Suggestions would be great since that is also a problem with cars today.
