Pacifier Cut-off Age? - Page 2

QUOTE (LDS_forever @ 16-May 06, 10:28 PM)

What about if the 9 year old had some type of mental disability? What about if she had some type of brain abnormality that makes her think and act as she is much younger? Some kids look very much "normal" but they are not. My son is one of them. Physically (until he opens his mouth) he looks normal in every sense of the word. He just turned six years old and people think he is four because of the way he talks and behaves.

I agree with what you are saying LDS, I suppose I should have said that the girl was in full school uniform for a local school, that you couldn't get in, if you had 'special needs'.

Both my two youngest children have 'special needs' and as you described your Son, they both look 'normal' until they speak, but it becomes obvious when they talk, that they have speech and language problems, even so, at that age, I think that the parents would be far better channelling into finding an alternative, rather than something that stands out.

I don't mean to be judgemental, but I have never seen any child even with disabilities/special needs of this age having a pacifier, like I said earlier, I was at fault for not clarifying that the girl wasn't in this category.

Age Cut-off Pacifier

Name: Joanna

Comments: Ok, I realize that some kids are mentally disabled, but many who are allowed to suck on pacifiers at like 9 or 10 aren't, and either way it is the responsibility of the parent to encourage the child to give up the pacifier. Because unfortunately, everyone who sees that child with a pacifier will be shocked and disgusted, and it looks very bad for the parent, and no matter what the "whole story" is, people are cruel, and the child will be taunted and teased. This treatment from peers can be MUCH more damaging to the child than the parent throwing away the pacifier!
