Ubuntu and Linux

Comments: Is Ubuntu and Linux the same system or language like Windows? I don't understand the whole terminology.
How to survive without Windows or Mac
Microsoft is about to drop Windows 8 on us and Apple has an operating system update coming soon. They will cost money. And do we need them? What if you could get all the photo-editing and other essential software absolutely free? Well, good news - you can. Ref. Source 1
Ubuntu is a distribution of Linux, a subset if you will. I think Linux refers to the Linux kernel, the essential, basic part of the operating system. Because the Linux kernel is open-sourced, people are free to create different distributions with different GUIs (Graphical User Interfaces) on top of it. Ubuntu is a very popular distribution that is known for its user-friendliness and it is recommended for first-time Linux users.
I can't say that I know a lot about Linux, but at least I've tried some Linux operating systems on my computer in virtual boxes. Personally, I would recommend Linux Mint instead of Ubuntu. Linux Mint is a derivative of Ubuntu which also focuses on usability, so it installs some non-free software such as flash and audio/video codecs for you, saving your time for you to find it. I also believe that Mint uses a better GUI than Ubuntu does.
Hope this helps,
