So much oil, so much resources, yet the people are so poor and the money (bolivar) has no value?

CHAVEZ SAYS HE'S READY TO TRANSFORM VENEZUELA

President Hugo Chavez says nothing can stop him from swiftly transforming Venezuela into a socialist state, and he faces few obstacles now that a crushing re-election win has given him free reign to pursue more radical changes.

VENEZUELA, IRAN TO FINANCE OPPOSITION TO U.S.

This is an open threat for war. I do wonder with all the mouth Chavez has - if the US were to attack Iran would he somehow come to the rescue? The Venezuelan force is that big? Nah... however to openly make such a statement you got to have some meat to back it up:

I wouldn't say he has "meat" to back it up. However, he and Iran do have their fair share of oil to support being general pains in the backside to the US. The one card the US does have though is more actively pursuing their own oil supplies in the Gulf and Alaska or perhaps a boycott of Citgo stations in the US. The US consumer can be pretty loyal to the country even if they don't exactly love Bush (just ask the French, who are still complaining about slumping sales of their products in the US). A boycott would be even more effective, since there is no real notification that your sales are going to suffer until they actually do and if it is like the self-imposed french product boycott, there is no notification on when things will get better, so they will have to just absorb the losses.

You are thinking about the economic part, but you must remember that back in 2005 Chavez announced openly that he was interested in buying a nuclear reactor from Argentina. Iran has also pledged help in getting his nuclear program off the ground. These countries mean business, they are not playing, they are not hiding behind a bush or mask like a terrorist, this is open defiance to the US way of thinking about what they should do as a sovereign nation. I think they will go far and intend to go far.

Chavez intends to change the constitution so that he can be re-elected as many times as possible - he is here for the long haul.

I have no doubt that any country now with money can buy a nuke if they want it. I really don't see Chavez having a nuclear weapons program as much as I see him using his oil money to buy a nuke. North Korea is open for business. They have exploded one (of course they are sorry about that...it was a accident) or two already, so they have the technology down and have the fuel for more, so someone will be buying from them. If Iran gets the technology down, they will be selling to a few wealthy customers as well for sure. Iran was in contacts with the Pakistani scientist that was responsible for their successful program, so I have little doubt that Iran will have success with their nuclear program too.

For the world future, I see a lot of "Cuban Missle Type Crisis" and a lot of payoff money/food from weathier countries to poorer ones with nukes.

Personally, I think Chavez loves himself too much to trade missle shots with the US. Not to mention, the loss of every Citgo store in the US woud be costly to him and he like his money a bit too. Now the character from Iran, I am not so sure about!

I understand your thinking, but if you think that Chavez has so much to lose from the US economic input into Venezuela then why do you think he is siding with her (USA) enemies so much and declaring his own country and enemy of the US? We can especially consider that soon Iran will have sanctions against her (another subject and Thread), so why side with someone that will be restrained? There must be more to it all than this... I feel generally more countries are having the attitude of "you cannot tell us what to do".

The Sanctions against Iran are truly aimed at stopping anyone from helping Iran with their program. Of course it says "stop pursuing nuclear weapons", but the only "teeth" to the sanctions are threats against those that might support (materially, technologically or otherwise) Iran's gaining weapons. The sanctions themselves really (to me) seem like all that say is we can't stop you, but we can make life uncomfortable for anyone that helps you.

It is popular to hate the US and the West. You don't have enough food to eat or you are cold this winter, hate the US and Bush. You don't have a car and your standard of living is low, hate the US and Bush. Don't focus on the total mismanagement of billions of dollars in oil money... There should be no problems in Venezuela if their government was run properly. However, to fund the corruption, someone has to go hungry and jobless.

He swears he is going to take Venezuela socialist. I hope he does as long as he lives up to the definition of socialism...at least some people would be working and tables will have food on them.

This is the same guy that had a successful coup against him only to see his victors put him back into position. Why... Do you think he possibly told the military it could have all it wanted? Hmmm... Better have a enemy if you are going to funnel all those riches into a military and not on your infastructure.
