So much oil, so much resources, yet the people are so poor and the money (bolivar) has no value?

Interesting that these two countries that seem so far apart in many ways besides distance are joining together against the US. Oil has a big part in it, I'm sure, and if I remember correctly, Iran was not long ago making plans to accept euros for oil rather than dollars. Up until now, it's always been dollars for oil in the OPEC nations. That change in itself is a "poke" at the US.

Interesting times ahead.

Venezuela's National Assembly have given initial approval to a measure that would let President Hugo Chavez enact laws by decree for 1 1/2 years, a key step in what the leftist calls an accelerating march toward socialism.

Isn't this exactly how one of the most infamous socialist societies in history get started? Of course, I am referring to National Socialism, or the Nazi culture of 1930's Germany.

Chavez has finally taken over all of the former US based oil companies in Venezuela. One of these companies had control over the largest known oil deposit in the world. In other words, the US has really gotten the boot from Venezuela.

Some time ago he also took over / shut down a US run media station. So what does this mean? Communism is coming to life in Venezuela?

CHAVEZ: VENEZUELA TO PULL OUT OF IMF, WORLD BANK

President Hugo Chavez announced Monday he would formally pull Venezuela out of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, a largely symbolic move because the nation has already paid off its debts to the lending institutions.
