So much oil, so much resources, yet the people are so poor and the money (bolivar) has no value?

Wouldn't you just love to know what history Chavez's government finds acceptable to teach in schools? I know I would! It would be fascinating to find out what was thrown out of the curriculum and what was installed. As far as dictatorship, he already has it. They gave him carte blanche to do what he wants with no ending date listed... Take command of all the money making businesses to fuel your government and then totally take control of all services and presto...a total socialist dictatorship!

Well, he did say he hopes to make Venezuela a Socialist country. The scary part are the amount of Venezuelans who support him and his views!

Oh, I can believe it and they have a right to be happy about it ... for now. There lives will actually probably improve under a total socialist government. The only problem with a pure socialist government is that they are really bound to a certain level of success due to corruption and inefficiencies that are basic to that style of government. So yes, they will be happy for a while, then they will want more and it wont be available to them. That is when there will be pressure put back on the government.

Many Russians were better off immediately after the revolution and turn towards communism/socialism. However, there then came a day when they stopped growing and they wanted more...

submit to the oversight of his socialist government as it develops a new curriculum and textbooks.

....new textbooks are being developed to help educate "the new citizen,"

...."We want to create our own ideology collectively -- creative, diverse," the president said, adding that it would help develop values of "cooperation and solidarity."

.... Chavez also noted that previous Venezuelan educational systems carried their own ideology. Leafing through old grade school textbooks from the 1970s, he pointed out how they referred to Venezuela's "discovery" by Europeans.

"They taught us to admire Christopher Columbus and Superman," Chavez said, adding that education based on capitalist ideology had destroyed "the values of children."

It's done in all countries, (obviously) of course, but when it's put forth so blatantly it really looks bad. Let the brainwashing begin!

This is to show two things, one how fragile is the freedom of speech in Venezuela and two, some Venezuelans seem to have serious anger management issues.

QUOTE
CARACAS, Venezuela  -  A Venezuelan lawmaker repeatedly slapped a journalist in the face during a television program Tuesday, accusing him of slander after he wrote about the death of her infant son years ago.

Congresswoman Iris Varela stormed onto the set of Gustavo Azocar's morning program on Tachira Regional Television, shouting: "I'm demanding a right of reply from this man who has offended me all the time on this program."

The on-air confrontation, in which Varela slapped Azocar several times and then hit him with the microphone, grabbed national attention in Venezuela and is likely to generate a wider debate in the country about free speech issues and the news media.

Azocar is an outspoken critic of leftist President Hugo Chavez, and Varela is one of Chavez's close allies in the National Assembly.

The lawmaker said her outrage had nothing to do with politics and everything to do with a dishonorable airing of her private life. Azocar recently wrote a book in which he recounted the death of Varela's infant son in a hospital in the early 1990s and called it a determining event in her life.

"He's offended me and he meddled with the most sacred thing, my dead son, and that's why I came," Varela said, holding the microphone after snatching it from Azocar.

I saw that, I was amazed that the guy did not try to restrain her, he looked silly raising his hands and still talking to the point that it looked staged.

Now on another note, it seems that Chavez likes to involve himself a little too much in other nation's affairs (something he accuses the US of doing):
