The Swift Sword says... Zork first collects the coins they saw earlier as well as inspects the sword, then he commands one dog to go up and search while the other two remain on guard with him.
Out of Character: First roll is for the base of the stairs and the second roll for up the stairs.

As you step on the center step the half way point three jets of flame are shot across the steps above below and where you are standing. This is a flame spell doing 4d6 damage. Durgan saved but the dog did not. !9 points damage on the dog that was on the steps. Durgan with the helm take 1/4 damage thus only 5 points damage.

"I think it's safe to come up now." He looks around to see what exactly triggered the trap.
Sessativa waits until everyone else has gone up.
